It's been a minute since I've been to a Sox game, but there is a lot of large parking lots around the stadium for a fee. A lot of tail-gating opportunities. If you are staying downtown, then take the train there's a stop at the stadium. The area is generally safe, it definitely is during game day.

A good tour is the Chicago river architectural tour.

the el is safe for the White sox stop and North. Cork & Kerry at the park is a must go to bar if you are into that kind of thing pre/post game. Hotels north of the loop (just north of the river) is best for short term nightlife. Pequod's is the best deep dish in town (will deliver). Wigleyville is a lot of fun to visit as well, but White Sox games are enjoyable (and much cheaper) if nostalgia isn't important. Don't wear Cardinals gear to Wrigleyville, but you will be fine at the Rate in whatever.

Where to stay: This really depends what you are looking for and what you will be doing. I would advise against staying in the Loop, it's fine and it's safe but it's full of tourist.

A lot of people like staying in the West Loop. Bucktown also has a great Inn (https://www.theleavittstreet.com/) I've never stayed here but go to this place all the time for cheeseburgers. There are a good amount of neighborhood bars and restaurants in the area as well.

If you are going to the Sox's game and not drinking, parking is usually fairly cheep but getting their via the CTA is super easy and an Uber ride would be my go to.

I live here so feel free to DM me if you are looking for any more detailed recommendations.

Also, (don't know if this has changed) we used to just buy the cheapest tickets we could find and go sit wherever because attendance is so low. If you are in someone's seats they will let you know, but just move a little ways. Nobody really cares much.

I would recommend staying downtown near Michigan and Wacker. Tons of great places with great views (Sheraton, Hyatt Regency, Trump). Don't assume you will have a great view without paying more for it. Be ready to pay downtown Chicago hotel parking fees. Park at the hotel and take the train to the game. No need to pay to park twice for the same day.

How are you prioritizing the sightseeing for parents v. kids? Tell us a little more and we can customize advice for you.

If you want to see a lot without necessarily getting out or going in places, you can drive Lake Shore Drive and take exits for Wrigley Field or continue up Sheridan Road to Loyola's main campus and all the way up to Evanston for Northwestern. Personally, I really like the restaurant choices in Evanston.

Sox park is near Chinatown, but I don't think that is worth the effort. If you go south from Sox park, you can go to the Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Chicago, Oriental Institute, and the Museum of Science and Industry. However, if you aren't comfortable in urban areas, you probably don't want to venture too much on the south or west sides.

I recommend the Chicago Historical Society river tour, but there are various options. All are pretty much the same, but the CHS has a mini-museum as your starting point.

Don't miss Aqua Tower which is near Michigan and Wacker. Super cool newer building by the leading Chicago architect these days, Jeanne Gang.

They really do a good job with the museums. The Shedd Aquarium is a must for us every time we've been there. The Field Museum is great. We really like walking along the shore between the Shedd and Navy Pier. Just overall good vibes when the weather is decent.

We've almost always driven in and parked at Soldier Field.

I was last in Chicago in 2023. We stayed at the StayPineapple hotel and really enjoyed the experience. The train station was less than a block away, and we took it to the White Sox game twice. It was crowded after the night game, but we didn't ever feel unsafe (just annoyed by the drunk people from the game who couldn't stand up and kept yelling).

Parking is right outside the stadium. $30-50 depending on which one.

Train is $2.50 each person each way ($5 for an all day pass including busses). Generally safe but if you've never been on it before, I recommend going to the front car where the conductor/driver is. Riff raff generally avoid that car. You might have a guy coming through mumbling, he's selling drugs. Kids with a mom selling candy bars. A guy selling single cigarettes. Just ignore them.

It's like a 5min walk from the stop to the stadium.

Stay in this area for the sights and generally where the vast majority of other tourists stay. My family likes the Hyatt Centric and the Hampton Inn Majestic. But honestly any of them with non crap reviews will be fine. Just find the price point that makes sense for you.

You won't find yourself anywhere close to areas you should avoid. Just follow normal big city rules and don't act like a fool.

Sites depend on the family situation. Navy Pier, Millennium Park with the Bean, numerous museums like the Art Institute, Field Museum, Griffin Museum, Shedd Aquarium. Those are the big common ones, but if you let us know what your family likes I can give specific recommendations.

I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend doing the architecture boat tour. Make sure to do the one by the architecture museum. https://www.architecture.org/city-tours/river-cruise

Chicago is loaded with great restaurants, including pizza. If you have not been here before, you HAVE to try it. It's located on 2121 Clark st...

Also, side note... Deep dish is not Chicago style pizza. Tavern style is widely what people prefer here.

Here are a few of my favorite places

https://g.co/kgs/wKMMpia - PIZZ'AMICI

- Novel Pizza Cafe

- Zarella Pizzeria & Taverna

Disagree. Deep dish is Chicago Style Pizza. However, growing up, it was always a special occasion type of event; like when family came in to town or to celebrate something. I don’t think we ever ordered deep dish as takeout and only had it while eating at a restaurant.

Now tavern style is definitely more popular because it’s more casual and cheaper.

Museum of science and industry can be great for kids due to the interactivity of the exhibits there.

Obligatory negative Chicago comment.....

It's been decades since I've been to Sox Park, but parking was pretty easy.

I find Navy Pier to be a wildly generic tourist trap, but when in Rome View attachment 150974

Haha. Cool photo, but I don't think it is real. Things have changed, but I doubt if they are changing in this direction at this location. I can't read the street signs, I doubt if they fit this location. In fact, I don't even think there is a street for that half-block between Wells and Franklin. Or maybe it is taken from farther west that it seems.

In the late 1990's and early 2000's, before I moved to Iowa, my office was about a block diagonally forward to the right from this "vantage point," if I'm understanding it correctly. A parking garage is on the right front. To the left, I think is where they are building luxury apartments.

The area around the UC has changed dramatically since my days here in the mid 90s.

Now they stole the USHL team from the Fox Valley for an arena by the UC

Not sure if Chicagoians will pay for a "premium" experience of watching kids play hockey, but such is life.

In general I still only go to the chitty under duress

Book a nice hotel downtown, the Westin on Michigan has always been one of my go-to's. Valet your car at the hotel, and then just Uber to the game and anywhere else you need to go. Avoid the hassle of driving and parking down there and fighting to get out after the game.
