Where would these schools go? How big do they get?

Pitt would end up in the Big 12. And Depending on how much basketball is the focus, I could see Yormark pining for Duke.

Tough to leave Duke out of the B12, but they just don’t offer a ton. Will the basketball brand survive now that Coach K is retired? Tough to say at this point.

It’s obviously going to be Big 12 gets to pick over the carcass after the SEC and Big 10 get done feasting. UNC, UVA, and one of FSU or Miami are headed for the Big 10; who knows what the SEC wants, but possible targets are likely FSU, Clemson, VT, and NCSU.

That leaves Pitt, Syracuse, and Louisville (yeah, I know most are gonna say “eff them” as the likely targets, with a chance at VT, NCSU, and Duke, I think UConn is also at play for the Big 12 at this time as well.

I think at this point Boston College and Wake Forest are DOA.

Notre Dame is going to save the day. They are going to start a "student-first" league that doesn't emphasize NIL. Programs like Cal & Stanford will join as well as any PAC12 & ACC castaways. ND will be an affiliate of this league but will retain their independent status and will continue to get an annual auto-qualifier berth to the CFP. Their deal with NBC will be extended and the new league will have a streaming deal with Peacock.

There’s no way in hell we take half that conference. Half of the half will be left out in the cold.

Miami to Eugene, a 48 hour road trip if you want to drive.

Assuming FSU, Clemson, UNC, UVA are off the board, the two that I really want are Pitt and Louisville. Gives WV and Cincy some regional games and the Backyard Brawl would be a nice property to own.

That's when a 24 or 32 team "super conference" will form.

I think 20 members is the stopping point, so my choices reflect that.

Big 10: UNC and Virginia. This is due to Big 10 getting Oregon and Washington

SEC: FSU, Clemson, Miami, NC State. I think NC State is the dark horse here, it will expand the SEC's footprint in to a new state and I believe has overall good fan support.

Big12: Louisville, Virginia Tech, Duke, and Pitt. Duke because of Yormark's plan for basketball. Althought, I wouldn't be upset with Georgia Tech to replace any of them. NC state is a must, if they fall to us.

NC State and Virginia Tech would be excellent grabs. They do offer the prospect of new states for the SEC, but I’m not sure if they are revenue adds or not. I don’t see the SEC brass excited about either of them like a Clemson or FSU.

Pitt is a no-brainer for basketball plus an instant rivalry with WVU.

Can Florida St and Clemson get out of the GOR? Won't all of their money stay in the ACC for 10 more years? Why can't the ACC just be the 4th league?

B10/SEC Lock
B10: UNC, FSU/Miami, UVA, other of FSU/Miami
SEC: UNC, UVA, FSU, Miami, Clemson

Same list (mostly), different conference priorities. The B10 will try to get into Florida, the SEC might try to keep them out. SEC needs to grow it's footprint (so FSU, Miami and Clemson are slightly lower priority).

B10/SEC Maybe
This entirely depends on if the B10 lands ND, and how big the conferences want to go.
  • VaTech, NC State - Maybe SEC, gotta grow the footprint but kind of a reach for either, IMO
  • Duke - pairs nicely with whomever wins UNC, but not sure if they have the value because they sure don't bring it on the gridiron.
B10/SEC Unlikely
  • GA Tech - fits the B10's circa 2012 expansion model perfectly. That model probably isn't working in 2031-35
B12's Ranking
  1. Anyone mentioned above (except GA Tech)
  2. Pitt - Good BB, good football, WV rivalry, good recruiting
  3. UConn - I know, not ACC, but basketball play
  4. Syracuse - corner the NE BB (but this one depends on how they navitate their coaching transition)
  5. Louisville - I don't like this one at all. With Cinci and WV already in the fold, I'm not sure you concentrate more in this area with Pitt and Louisville. Athletic Dept is a dumpster fire.
  6. GA Tech - good recruiting, but they don't add much else.

Ideally and realistically I'd add Pitt, Louisville, Va Tech, and NC State. I think those would all fit in nicely and be good for WVU and Cincy. If I had a choice I'd want Duke over UCF (duh) but Duke doesn't really feel like a big12 school to me.

Everyone really needs to tap the brakes on Duke and see how things shake out overall for them going forward without Coach K. NC State is the best brand in North Carolina and would measure up better with the rest of the Big 12 maybe more than any other school out there (assuming you can't get FSU and Clemson at the same time...)

That's true but we also need to see how the new unlimited money for SEC/Big Ten football works out.

If they pull away because of $$$, it might make sense to make the best basketball conference better.

Right now outside of Ohio State the Big Ten isn't really that dominant on the fb field. The SEC is but it has been for decades. Does that change? Does the soft middle and horrid bottom of the Big Ten become deeper and more talented?

More food for thought. If you will note ISU has a football viewership equal to the number 3 ACC school. And, while Duke may be a good BB school, it's football numbers stink. And, who would want Va, VTech, and BC if you are looking for football $ from the networks. The Big 12 only needs one Florida School (Miami) to pair with Central Florida, and one NE school for Cinci and WVa (Syracuse is the best of the bunch, but so far away, so maybe Louisville or Wake Forest). I expect NC and NCSt to be taken by the B1G unless ND is frightened into joining a football conference. And, Clemson and Florida State will go to the SEC.

As a comparison (Big 12 football viewership)
Numbers will change as the new conference teams settle in:

TCU is 2,200,000
Oklahoma State is 1,680,000
Baylor is 1,320,000
Kansas State is 1,230,000
Utah is 1,160,000
BYU is 997,000
Iowa State is 881,000
West Virginia is 774,000
Kansas is 732,000
Texas Tech is 680,000
Cincinnati is 653,000
UCF is 510,000
Arizona is 506,000
Colorado is 352,900
Arizona State is 314,000
Houston is 242,000
