When should I seed my lawn?

I use A+ Lawn Care (Cyclone Fanatic Advertiser!) and they advised that I seed now. I didnt want to because things are busy enough with my daughter in everything this fall I dont want to have to worry about watering the lawn. They are going to aerate my lawn though next week and they said I could not seed in the spring because they spray preemergents in the spring, so the question is when should I over-seed my lawn? How long should I wait in the spring after the preemergents are down?

I use A+ as well and they over-seeded my lawn at the end of September. I watered for the next 2 weeks then had them shut down my irrigation system for the year. I have them aerate and over-seed at the same time every year.

My dad (an agronomist) has always done his grass seeding in the fall. His thinking is that it'll be cold by the time weeds would come in and that way the grass has a start in the spring and doesn't have to fight as many weeds as compared to if he had seeded in the spring. This has always been for fresh seed on bare ground, though. I don't know if he would do the same for overseeding.

You can seed now but it is on the very edge in the season where you might see results next year. Mid to late September is best best.

Sounds like a good company that knows what they are talking about. Fall is best for overseeding. I'd take their advice however you may be on the late side already for seeding this year as temps will be dropping soon.

I assume in the spring they will be applying Pendimethalin (Prowl) or Trifluralin (Treflan) as part of the preemergence control. Soil residual time would push overseeding in to the early part of summer. NOT a good time for overseeding.

That's what I was taught too. It's always best to seed in September (a little later the more south you go). I would think the aerating wouldn't cause harm to the seed, but I don't know for sure. They are right about the preemergents in the spring. I guess this all depends on what type of turf you have as well.

You can dormant seed in mid nov. The seed will come up in march and then
you can install your preemergents in the spring.

If I go that route do I have to water the see in November?

I wouldn't seed now the traditional way. If you need some results for spring, mow very short (don't scalp it) in November. Rake out the bare areas that require the seed. Throw it down before the 1st snowfall and try to rake it into the soil a bit. You will have some success with it germinating early in the spring, hopefully before they put down the pre-emergent crabgrass prevent.
