The distinction between less and fewer is one that bugs me. You use less when describing an uncountable amount; fewer with a countable quantity.
*There was less scoring in that game because there were fewer baskets.
*There was less criminal interest in the Cyclones because there were fewer arrests than the Hawkeyes.
