What is going on with Arizona State's coaching search?

The way they yanked the offer from June Jones made me think they had a really good alternative waiting (i.e., Sumlin)...but that's been dispelled by Sumlin going to aTm. The candidate list keeps shrinking, and ASU's been eerily quiet...

I have a paranoid nightmare that they have an informal agreement with a coach but are keeping quiet (at the coach's insistence) because that coach is an honorable person that doesn't want to distract from his current school's forthcoming bowl game. The coach would have to be a very hot commodity for ASU to willingly invite the negative publicity involved with revoking the offer to June Jones. It's rumored that ASU's president (an ISU alumnus) personally made the decision to withdraw the offer to Jones...

I think you can see where I'm going, and I'm 99.9% sure there's nothing to it...but it's a very odd situation and I won't be entirely comfortable until they name a coach not named Paul Rhoads.

Arizona State would be a great job. You're four to five hours away from the southern California recruiting hotbed. You can use the weather and the girls/party campus reputation in recruiting. The Pac 12 South is weak outside of USC so there's good chance for immediate success.

You would think they could get a good coach

+1. It appears the Univ president himself pulled the plug at the last minute after the offer had been extended and was about to be signed by Jones
