Here's everything Kansas coach Bill Self said about Iowa State after the Cyclones' 74-57 win over the Jayhawks Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum.

"Maybe Jamie (Pollard’s) got them so much in NIL money, that they could just go out and get anybody… but the bottom line is the pieces fit."

**** you, Self. Projecting a little there.

I really like Self. Talked to him once at an airport for like 5 min, couldn't have been nicer. I think NIL has hurt them because everyone else can pay guys now. He's always complimentary of us though.

If you watch the video he seemed to be joking there.

Thanks for the notice.

I read the article without any irony so that comment stuck out.

Glad Self is self-aware enough to realize the Cyclones are doing this on a Moneyball budget.

I'm sorry, I know people love to hate Self just because he coaches for KU, but I just can't dislike him. And he is just so knowledgeable about the game...always gives opposing coaches/teams credit where its due....if you want a head coach to hate look no further than Manhattan, Kansas....or hell, Mick Cronin is an asshat too

Cronin, MadFran, D. Hurley, and Pearl are at the top of the asshat list.

I will say that I laughed at the NIL dig Self took last night. I think it was more of a dig at them than us. But it’s a good reminder that our guys probably have and definitely will have schools coming after them with huge money offers. And that we should really, really appreciate the players that do sign here.

Yeah, at the conference Jamie was in the back and Williams said he was more joking with him. He laughed when he said it, no malice at all which is hard to get with the article.

I think it's really a kind of telling quote, and that's how I read it too. I think he knows deep down that these NIL "super teams" aren't successful. Kansas, Arkansas, K-State-- it's not working. I imagine he feels the pressure to assemble the best group of transfers he can being at Kansas, but he knows that's not going to work. They've quit developing players, and I think this season is showing that the way to build a roster is part player development, part patching holes in your roster with solid transfers.

Williams mentioned it in his postgame, but that was easily the most disinterested I've seen Self during a game. I just wonder if some of this NIL stuff has him worn out.

Want to know why TJ and his teams have been so incredibly successful?

Self summed it up better than anyone has so far during his post game presser. His summary is so simple, but so profound:

"I don't want to spin this negatively. It wasn't a lack of effort [on our players'part]. It was a lack of really understanding and respecting how competitive you had to be to be successful in this game.

Guys still try, but everybody fricken tries. Try is a baseline. You don't get a ribbon for trying. So that is the thing I thought we were lacking as much as anything tonight."

Every player in college basketball tries and every player thinks they're playing hard. But there's a level beyond playing hard that's called competing that the elite players and elite teams manage to reach.

You ask any Big 12 coach what they like most about Iowa State and they all say the same thing... it's how hard we compete.

Not only does TJ get it, but he has the ability to get his players to get it as well. I love Gilbert's quote from the other day when he said "Iowa State is not for everyone" and "We work hard as hell".

That's what I love so much about TJ and his teams. They are unquestionably the #1 in the nation when it comes to the grit scale

If TJ and ISU has proven anything thus far in the NIL era is it’s you can pay for the best team in the country, but chemistry still matters. We may not have the elite players, but the guys definitely like each other, TJ, the fans, and the challenge of playing here.

I think he’s been pretty low key since the heart issues. But there was one point last night that I thought was perfect for a typical Self technical in the first half. I was disappointed he didn’t bother to do it.

Also I’ll disagree slightly that it’s not working for Kansas. They are still a really good team. I think us blowing them out says more about us than them. But I’d guess bill finds it less FUN. If you watch us, it’s mostly fun.

Same thing with football. It can not be emphasized enough how fortunate we are that is the case.

But I hope it doesn’t make us fans complacent. It’s only because we have elite coaches and amazing players (who are great people) that it works. That’s harder than it appears.

It was about 6 seasons ago at Hilton he went nuts at the official's and earned a "T".............then turned around and gave the crowd a wink and a smile. That's just who he is.
