TBH, I always thought if there was a better WR in this draft N'Keal Harry was the guy not Metcalf. He's the real deal and will probably be really good for the Pats, unfortunately.

Side note... How hard is it to really run a pass route? Is that really a skill? I mean run 10 yards and turn around is a pretty simple thing. Yes, there are minor details but it seems like any pro-WR should handle with ease.

Getting the footwork right so you enter and leave the cut at speed without telegraphing the move takes some work. So does executing it consistently because the throw is often made before the cut ever happens. And it would be easy if there was only one cut (e.g. 90 degree cut to the right) that you had to master. Need to be able to maximize the cut to L or R and at different angles as well as double moves, etc.

I would also add that some young receivers struggle with reading the defense and what coverage they are in. Option routes that the assignment is different depending on what the defense is doing. Stuff not all offenses have to deal with at the college level.

That is just a function of mental ability and quick thinking. I guess you could just call that route running.
