All-time records:

  • vs BYU, ISU is 0-2. 77-54 loss in Provo in the 92-93 season, and the 75-69 upset in Ames in the second round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament (ISU was #3, BYU was #11). That one really stung because we hosted the next two rounds as well.
  • vs Cincinnati, ISU is 2-0. 78-42 @ UC in the 13-14 season and 85-54 @ ISU in the 14-15 season.
  • vs Central Florida, ISU is 0-0
  • vs Houston, ISU is 0-0

I couldn't find anything interesting on Houston.

BYU has 19 players on its roster, including 5 from overseas (3 from New Zealand, 1 Sweden, 1 Brazil).

In short, when I said to myself "Hey, Coach Abe is at UCF! Do any of the other three schools have interesting ties to ISU WBB?" the answer was no.

Cincinnati was really bad last year, but they've been better than that in other recent years. They finished #2 in their conference in 2020 and had an RPI of 60.

NCAA Tournament appearances:

UCF: 6 total NCAA appearances (including 2019 and 2021). Zero wins.

Cincinnati: 4 total NCAA appearances (none since 2003). One win (2002). They did make the 2018 and 2019 WNIT.

Houston: 5 total NCAA appearances (last was in 2011). One win (2004). They did make the last three WNITs (18, 19, 21).

BYU: 14 total NCAA appearances (including 2019 and 2021). 5 first round wins (including 2019 and 2021) and two second round wins (one of which we are familiar with).

For comparison, ISU has 19 appearances, 11 first-round wins, 5 second-round wins, and 2 third-round wins, and we gave each of the four above schools a head start -- our first appearance in 1997 was after each of them had already appeared.

Really nice additions from a women's basketball standpoint. I would expect on average them all to be top half of league teams or close in any given year.

I don't know that I'd be that optimistic for them (except maybe BYU), but they should be able to start off fairly well since they can use their newfound power-5 status in recruiting a couple years before they have to play a power-5 conference schedule.

Based on 2019 UCF would be 4th in Big 12 in attendance. BYU, Houston, & Cincinnati all had only around 1400 ave home attendance.

Cincinnati is probably the exception right now, but we also have some weak teams in bottom half of existing Big 12 the remaining TX teams excluding Baylor and the two Kansas teams are not lighting the world on fire recently. But you are right I may have overstated.
