The wife and I will be moving to the Cedar Rapids area in approximately a month, asking with our 10 month old golden retriever. We have a great vet here in the Quad Cities, but won't want to travel that far every time we need to bring him in. Anyone have veterinarian recommendations in the Cedar Rapids area? Thanks in advance!

What part of town will you be living in? We go to Linn Animal Hospital near the intersection of Blairs Ferry Rd. and Marion Blvd. but that would only be convenient if you lived on the east side.

Either way, most of the vets I know of around this area are CYCLONES so you'll be in good hands!

My wife works at Frey Pet Hospital, it is a good clinic with multiple veterinarians. However it is a little more expensive than other clinics. The owner is an alum as well.

Prairie Creek Veterinary Clinic in Fairfax Iowa. Ask For Dr. Kadlec.

We went to Frey when I was growing up on the west side and they were excellent. I believe Dr. Frey himself has retired (or he may even be deceased) but if the culture he instilled prevails today it would be an excellent place to go.

I've gone to the Anamosa Vet Clinic and have had good luck. I used to go to Linn Animal Hospital, but we had some communication issues. I only wanted my cat to get the rabies and distemper shots, but didn't make that clear and got talked into more stuff she ended upgetting like 8 or 9 shots. Some shot of something up her nose that she didn't like and had sneezing/nasal issues for about 6 months after. Switched over to Anamosa Vet Clinic saying I only wanted rabies and distemper and they didn't push me for anything else.

We'll be living west of town, but would have no problem traveling to another part of town (or another town) if it meant higher quality care.

My family has been going there since '93 when Dr. Frey was still the owner, he still comes around but is no longer involved in the business. Ryan Steen is current owner, he took over probably almost ten years ago, not sure exactly when. They still have a great culture there from my experiences. Dr. Steen is one of the few orthopedic surgeons in the area as well.

See Dr. Lemme at http://www.blairsferrypethospital.com/blairs-ferry-pet-hospital-about.html

He is a long time ISU FB season ticket holder and supporter.

I use Park Towne Animal Hospital http://parktowneanimalhospital.com/, which has 3 locations around town. One on the NE side, one in Marion, and one on the SE side. I prefer Dr. Winterowd (Cyclone) over Dr. Johnson (Aggie), he is much more personable, and always like to chat about the cyclones.

They have been helping me with my dogs epilepsy, and are reasonable for their services.

We like Davis Vet Clinic in Solon. Definitely old-school small town vet.

Not a fan of the pet hospital near the airport (forget name). Super expensive, and they treat your pet like it's your human child. They will run up big bills on tests and anything else they can convince you into approving. And the offices are nicer than most acute care centers for people. We had a cat with diabetes, and he got over-insulined. The usual treatment is to rub caro syrup or similar on his cheeks so he gets some sugar. They ran multiple blood tests, kept him overnight, etc etc and it ended up $400+. And I had to cut them off or it would have been worse. When a good vet would have just said - "needs caro syrup". But if you are OK spending $5k on your dog, might be just what you are looking for.

We go to Linn Animal hosptial. Since you will be living west of CR you might check out the vet on Blairstown. We have gone there and he was cheaper and easier to get an appt with than anyone in CR.

I also suggest the Anamosa Vet Clinic. They will be by far cheaper than any Cedar Rapids Vet. They are right off of 151 before you get to Anamosa so the convenience is perfect. They now have 4 vets on staff with 3 a few years out of college. They can get you in same day if you are flexible, or can schedule accordingly the next day. They just went through a large expansion and have a very nice facility, which now includes dog boarding and obedience schooling.

Interesting info about Brian Darrow (the owning Vet). He is a former Drake Relays champion and a member of the school record 4x800 team for Iowa State. He loves Iowa State athletics (but I imagine most Vets in Iowa do).

Lots of good choices in Cedar Rapids. I go to Edgewood Animal Hospital, but my preferred vet there (Bruce Ennen) only does surgeries now as he is too busy. I see his wife for wellness visits.

Frey is a great place, maybe a bit higher priced - but worth it? Your call. My daughter worked there in the past, so previous posters are right on. Great people and attitudes.

If you're willing to make the drive, I'd also recommend Anamosa. I second the high praise for Brian Darrow. He used to take care of our cattle (before we sold the herd) and treated our St Bernards as well. Heart of gold and a great vet.

Doubt you'd go wrong with either.

Second the expensive price about the animal hospital out by the airport. My dog decided to eat a weeks worth of pills one sunday afternoon while I wasn't home. I decided to take her out there. The costs for her monitoring etc was going to run very expensive. I also took her there in the middle of the night after her first seizure. Pricey, but it is nice to have an emergency place you can go 24/7.

One thing I didn't realize till I went there was, how affordable the ISU Vet Hosipital was. When my dogs seizures were not being controlled well by medication my vet recommended a visit to the neurologist. Told me to expect around a $1000.00 bill. When all was said and done the bill was around $150. I did decide I didn't need the $2800 MRI though
