OK, but that's way too big to mount on a shark....not impressed...

Just so everyone's clear, the two explosions on the boats were because of the explosives on the boat, the laser didn't make the boom itself, just ignited the charge on board already.

Still pretty cool, but it could be misleading if you don't read the description.

There's a Chinese food joke in there somewhere.

When I went to Beijing, my guide swore that Chinese people do not eat cats. But that in the Korean neighborhoods, there are no felines to be found...

Sure, the Navy can blow something up on a moving boat with a laser, but they can't link the YouTube video in their article.

Thankfully, cyinne has these skills.

I'm sure there needs to be a "Laser in Operation" alert sound for deck personnel, right? Perfect opportunity to add the "pew pew".

No different than how they are going to add loud engine sounds to electric cars so pedestrians can hear them coming. Isn't engineering great?

For an extra $50k per unit, the contractor can add a variety of sailor-selectable sound options:
"pew pew" i.e. Star Wars
Trek phaser sound
Dirty Harry .45 pistol "bang"
etc etc

Like ring tones. Anything you can download, your destroyer mounted laser can sound like.

OK, now I want one.

This laser weapon system was on the "Future Weapons" show a few years ago. I wonder why it's making the news now.

Partly because of the successful test (as mentioned by 00), and probably partly to cause doubt in potential foes - can we can shoot down their ICBMs?

I sure hope we can. Seems like our guys always have some stuff in the back room that you don't know about until it's used. Big advantage.

Seems like so many of the futuristic things I saw as a kid are coming to fruition. But we keep investing in the wrong things. Where's my freaking flying car?
