I had to watch this one from home as I attended a good friend's parent's 60th wedding anniversary. I have to say that 60 years (my parents just celebrated 65 Friday) is an amazing accomplishment. Definitely worth celebrating. Fortunately, thanks to Cyclone TV on my iPad, I was able to see most of the game from home. Here we go with game 1 of the 2014-15 season!
Moody made her presence known immediately with an assist to a driving Fernstrom.
As always Seanna is in the right place. Got the first rebound, got the second on the other end and scored on a pretty left handed put back. She is, IMO, the lynchpin of this team.
The pace seemed different…perhaps just my imagination. There seemed to be a higher level of activity with Moody leading things. You could see her defensive speed was a little off in the beginning.
The streak continues…Fernstrom hits our first three. Not only that, she has hit 12 of the first 14 points!! That’s called some great scripted action and her recognizing opportunities.
USC got on the board after a steal and followed that with a wide open shot when someone didn’t shift on defense.
After a slow start, USC seemed to shift gears and were out hustling ISU. Their defense was more aggressive and the were getting boards on the offensive end. This led to a 6-1 run by USC to draw within 15-6.
USC was quickly getting into foul trouble with five, 5 min in. Kidd entered the game.
After seeming to slow down (a la the traditional stand around and pass offense) there was a nice fast break with Moody hitting Jadda for a three and that was followed by a Jadda steal and an assist to Brynn for a layup. The lead stretched to 20-6
You could see a strange mix of activity so far. There were signs of the “old†Iowa State that was methodical, slow, and a bit frustrating. You could also see the influence of the new with more movement, better screens, and a tougher inside-out game. Defense was lacking no matter who was in.
Beautiful play of the half. Kidd gets a steal and when sealed off outside finds a slashing Durr for two and the harm.
The sisters were able to slowly reestablish the lead with better defense and rebounding stronger. Another fast break with a lead pass to Moody increased the lead to 33-16.
Fernstrom was at the top of the key with the ball and her vantage point allow here to see and feed Brynn for a nice three.
Shades of Angie Welle…Fernstrom got a nice feed and forced through a double team to get another left handed three. Yes, she’s a LONG way from being Welle, but the move is so familiar to what we saw 15 years ago.
Something different…Moody is MAKING her layups. They seem to have a softer touch to them.
Good hustle and an increased defensive presence has led the ladies to extend the lead to 42-17.
Both teams spent some time really scrapping for the remainder of the half. The Sisters really took advantage of any openings and kept the lead right around 20 points the rest of the way. USC made some nice contested shots, but ISU just had too many weapons.
The end of the half was a bit disjointed as USC stole a lazy inbounds pass from Jadda and was fouled. Missed the free throws. Then our last possession was all sorts of “out of whack†ending in a missed layup attempt. Halftime score - 53-32.
The second half was interesting in how Coach F. rotated players, worked with different defense, and ran offensive schemes. Perhaps the worst thing to watch was how slow our reactions were when playing the zone. USC made us pay over and over again as they got hot from deep as we failed to cover open shooters.
In the end the ladies maintained their cushion and won 98-76 after an even second half.
Observations from afar
Bre Fernstrom is going to be fun to watch. She has some nice moves inside, can hit the medium range jumper and can set up and the line and drill the three. If all goes well she will be something very special.
Seanna - as previously mentioned - is the lynch pin of this team. She just does a little bit of everything. She's in position to rebound. She can lead the offense. She drives and scores. She can make some tough assists. All while doing it very quietly.
Brynn started off cool, but heated up. When she wasn’t scoring she was grabbing boards. She seemed more aggressive than in year’s past. Perhaps its that senior leader mode that is coming through.
Moody made an impact today. The offense is clearly better with her there. She played smart and the tempo seemed to be a bit faster today. Best news? She’s making her layups when she drives.
Kidd. One big difference so far this year. When the ball touches her hands she has a quick release. She doesn’t have to set up and then shoot…she just shoots and is shooting well. Being a pest on D as well.
Jadda is interesting to watch. She had some nice steals today and then other times seemed to slack off her player too much leaving them open.
If you look at minutes played you are seeing the rotation firming up and three of the frosh are a big part of it. Ricketts wasn’t as effective today, but I expect her to play a critical role. Was somewhat surprised after her exhibition performances that Jensen didn’t play much.
Big plus? Free throw shooting. This has been the hallmark of Sister ball for quite a while. Fennelly always preaches make more than the other team shoots. Today? 28/32 for 86% while USC attempted 15. Mission accomplished.
Next up is Drake on Tuesday. See you all there.
