I’m not sure what you could say about the first half that really wasn’t good for the Sisters. Statistically speaking, the only downside was the ladies getting out-rebounded. The scoring was led by Kidd and Bre and Seanna doing her usual on the boards. Of course if you watched the beginning of the game you saw some pretty ugly - probably break hangover - play as the ladies would only score 7 points over the first six minutes of the game. Nothing wanted to go in. Finally the ladies would take the lead for good on a 3 by Em and not look back the rest of the way. Howard seemed to go into a scoring funk and what had been a close game 11 minutes in and would turn into a 27-13 spurt over the last 8 minutes. At the half the Clones were up 43-28. The most troubling stat for our ladies was seeing Brynn pick up two fouls and spend too much time on the bench.
The second half started off all ISU. Howard couldn’t hit anything and our ladies grabbed every rebound and seemed to convert them into points on the other end. A pair of 3’s sandwiched around a 2 by Bre extended the lead to 23 and Howard had to call a quick timeout. Bryan would pick up her 3rd foul and go back to the bench. It didn’t really help as the ladies kept the pressure on. Over the first five minutes of play the sisters went on a 29-0 run (over 13 minutes) that was complete team ball. There were offensive boards, assists, 2’s, 3’s and free throws. We would see extended play by Nakiah. Personally, I’m seeing the future in this young lady. So far she seems non-plussed by the change to college ball. A big part of the game plan was to push inside to Bre and take the open shots from outside. Bre was VERY active and hit baby hooks, made shots after the foul and was gathering in needed rebounds. I think this was a good game for her to work her craft.
I fully realize Howard isn’t a very good team, but to hold a team scoreless for such an extended time is an accomplishment. The team got into the best flow of any half I’ve seen all year. With 7 minutes left Howard would finally score and the lead was 72-30. Interestingly in this one, and this is something I don’t like seeing, is the team was led by underclassmen. The scoring leaders were Kidd, Seanna, and Bre. While this bodes well down the road, this year we need to see Brynn and Nikki leading the way.
We got to see the entire team play considerable minutes late in this game. It was fun to see Albrecht nail some shots from distance and watch Maddie hit the boards. Every player except Blaire scored. Every player but Maddie and Brynn had an assist. Every player but Albrecht had a rebound. Yes…this was total team involvement. Final score: 90-44.
Notes:
POG - this is going to be a tie. I have to mention Seanna as she just keeps doing what she does every game. She ended up with a double-double and some nice assists. On the other side was Bre. 18 points, 6 boards, and 3 assists. Oh heck…you can’t mention those two and not add Kidd to the trifecta. She shot very well tonight garnering 14 points. She was key in the first half when Bryn was on the bench in foul trouble.
Domination. - can’t say more than what I already have. The second half was total domination. We were down in rebounding at half and ended up with a sizable lead.
Assists - Wonderful to see. Any time you have nearly 30 assists in a game you’re doing something right. Nakiah led the way with 7 followed by Nikki with 6. Top assist of the night - Bell to Jensen late in the game. Nice lob pass as the team was hustling up court. Shows that it pays to hustle.
The streak - yes it continued in a big way. The team shot nearly 50% from downtown hitting 15 on the night.
Free throws - didn’t get to the line much, but hitting 7 of 8 is my kind of percentage. Surprising? Not a single guard shot a free throw.
Interesting stat - Consider that the ladies only scored 7 points in the first 6 minutes of the game. That means they hit for 83 over 36 minutes. That’s an impressive 2.3 points per minute.
Concerns? - there really shouldn't be many, but getting very limited production out of Brynn and Nikki is a bad trend we have seen in too many games this year. On the other hand, the plus side is the team performed well without what could be its top three players contributing.
