The first half was painful to watch. We always seemed a step slow on defense and our offense was nonexistent. The few points we gained in the first 12 minutes (a total of 5) came from inside work. The outside shots were abysmally off. To make matters worse, the ladies were getting pounded on the boards by the bearettes. Too many second chance shots (I saw four offensive boards on one possession for the mighty Mulkies…and that ended with a trey). We just seemed a step slow on everything we tried. Lets just say things just got uglier and uglier as time went on. With about seven to play it was all Lady Bears 22-5. Whew.
Watching the ladies it just seemed like everything was forced. Drive the lane and throw up a hard prayer. Shoot a jumper off balance and watch it careen off the rim. The team was a whopping 2-21 from the field at the 6 minute mark. The offense was simply offensive. Nothing was working. I will also say the women looked tired. Third game in seven days. Could it be catching up with them? The unforced turnovers were practically embarrassing.
Watching Baylor what I see is faster, bigger, better. They were consistently beating the ladies down court and several of them resulted in easy layups before the sisters were even back and setting up.
Let’s just say that the half was like watching the varsity play the jv. Not pretty. I guess this is why Baylor is ranked #3? The one and only highlight of the half was seeing Kidd start to warm up. During the last 3 minutes she practically singlehandedly (9 pts) brought ISU along and actually made it somewhat respectable at the half 37-18. That flurry at least gave some hope.
There really isn’t much to recap from the second half that doesn’t duplicate what has already been said. Our offensive woes continued. Things were so bad that the team had used ALL of its timeouts by the 15 minute mark. That speaks volumes to the frustrations being experienced tonight. Moody continued to be the anti-Moody and would find herself on the bench with 1-13 shooting, 3 turnovers and 1 assist. Yes, it was that kind of night.
The team continued to struggle mightily from the offensive side of things consistently sticking around the 18-19 percent mark for made shots. If you’ve ever heard the song, “Brick House†by the Commodores, well, this game fit the title to a “T.†In the mean time, Baylor would continue to score in a workmanlike manner and the score just kept getting further and further out of hand. To give you an idea how bad our offensive woes were? At the seven minute mark only Kidd and Bre had more than one basket. Brynn, Fallon, Nakiah and Em all had goose eggs in their stat lines.
And so that’s how it went on this cold Tuesday night. It was a take ‘em behind the woodshed and lay a thumpin’ on them type of game. Sad thing is…I thought it felt like it could have been much worse if it weren’t for the defensive effort and even that faded in the last few minutes of the game. Final score: Baylor 79-47.
Observations
POG - Kidd. Without her this thing would have given ugly a Miss American title. It seemed that she was the only one capable of scoring on this night. I can’t imagine what the game might have been like if she had ANY help from the rest of the team (besides Bre).
Three point shooting? What if I said the team combined (minus Kidd) for a big fat zero? Thankfully Kidd had several.
ISU was held to THIRTY points under its offensive average tonight. At the handshake it appeared as if Mulkey say “Bill, it was just one of those nights†type of things. She’s right.
As good as Moody was against Texas we saw the anti-Moody tonight. Unforced turnovers all over the place. Very careless with the ball. In the first half alone she was 0-9 from the field.
Bre continues to improve. She pulled in some good rebounds and overall did a good job on the floor against a big Baylor squad.
I can’t imagine how full Hilton would be if the ladies were ranked 3rd in the NCAA. Baylor’s gym vacant compared to Hilton.
Baylor had nearly a 1:1 ratio between assists and made baskets.
Rebounding. In the last two games I watched our ladies rebounding. All too often they are standing flat footed and wait for the ball to come to them. In the second half today it allowed Baylor to get second chances and to limit our opportunities. They have to learn to jump to extend their reach…especially our bigs.
A couple of days off now to get ready for the road game at KSU. This one should be interesting as it will be a rough and tumble beat ‘em up type of game. After a strong start at home, the ladies withstood a rally behind a rash of ISU turnovers to narrowly win 60-55. They had best be prepared to handle the ball better this time around.
