Today I learned that a chunk of the movie Twister was filmed in central Iowa, specifically Ames. Hell, Ames had the World Premiere of Twister right here in our foreclosed North Grand Mall.

Does anyone know what was filmed in Ames? I found out what was filmed near Eldora (last scene) and Boone but I couldn't find what was filmed in Ames.

One of the scenes with trees all over the road was filed southwest of Ames. They brought in a bunch of cut down trees and piled them in the ditches.

Opened thread thinking you were looking for locales to film some naked Twister stuff.

Disappointed.

Boring Saturday morning continues.

Ames was the base camp for filming. A lot filmed on the outskirts and by Boone in the river valley. Ames gave them the hotels houses facilities and extras they needed to film.

Company I used to work for rented out part of their office space to the film crew for quite a while. I'm not sure exactly what was done, but the thought was that they viewed the dailies there.

Pilot Mound was where some of the ending was filmed. The part where they are running from the big twister and the farm machinery is falling from the sky. There is even a sign up on the road that tells that Twister was filmed up there. My dad's tractor dealership supplied all the lawn mowers and tractors that are in the film as they drive by the buildings. When they filmed that part we got passes to go watch and got to go back to where they staged and met the guys who run the cameras and mics. They took us around the lot, fed us, showed us the dodge trucks they used. It was one of the best days ever. Great times.

The scenes with the trees being uprooted getting stuck under the truck trying to get away from the tornado along with the semi falling out of the sky were filmed north of Cambridge where the highway crosses the Skunk River.

The scenes where the tractors and combine fall out of the sky and they drive through the house were filmed on the road around Hickory Grove Lake near Colo.

I know this sounds sad, but I really would love to have a 1996 red dodge ram

The scened where the gas tanker goes across the road was filmed north of Cambridge (8 miles from Ames). There's still a "scar" on the road from the fire. Interestingly, it was my cousin who ran the carne that drug the truck and combine over the road. Bill Paxton drank with us in the bar up on Main Street during filming and was an AWESOME. Helen Hunt was a (word that rhymes with her last name). Other parts of the movie were east of Boone too.

Cool story alert: I actually worked at the North Grand Mall theater and got to work the door tearing tickets at the world premiere. I got to take Gov Branstad's ticket and met Helen Hunt's stunt double. Her stunt double! Told you it was a cool story.
