My friend really isn't a partier and he likes to eat healthy and work out, so UV might fit him well.

Edit: I'm 18, turn 19 in july. Will be a soph at transfer time.
UV sucks. Plain and simple. Middle of nowhere. Freddy is the furthest north I would live, and it's not cheap (I live there currently). You have your own kitchen to make food. If you don't feel like making food, you can walk into Hawthorne and get a pizza, etc. Hawthorne has a workout room (never been in there). The rec is about an 8 minute walk.

2 options for free parking: you are not a student yet, so u can just park someplace (don't park in a tow zone - look for spot that says "permit required from 7:30 till 4:30 or something like that). Once u get a ticket, write visitor on the back and mail it in. You get 3 free ones as a visitor (once ur a student - u'll have to pay).

Second option - stop at the armory and tell them u are visiting. They'll usually give you a visitors parking pass that is free, and it'll let you park for the day.

I'd park in the Town Engineering lot if you aren't going to be there for more than a couple hours, and if you haven't received any tickets yet, just like this poster said. You'll get at least 1 ticket, and maybe 2, but you can "visitor" them away. The Armory is directly east of Town Engineering, so you can also get a pass from there before you do anything else (park on the north side of the building)--MAKE SURE THEY UNDERSTAND YOU'RE THINKING OF TRANSFERRING IN, AND HAVE A MEETING WITH AN ADVISOR/RECRUITER.

You don't even want to know some of the mistakes I've seen in the field from former ConE's

haha atually, both schools are great and it depends if you want to be inside desigining, or outside building and coordinating.

I would NEVER want to live at University Village....if you want to live in the dorms go with Maple Willow Larch or Eaton or something along those lines....if you would like to meet some new people and be close to where the nightlife is stay as far from UV as possible

Larch is a dump stay away.

Krsiten Mauro. I think I'm good with my academic stuff as of right now, and after I meet with her, I think I'll be sure.

The stuff that I'm looking for right now is more of the general university stuff.

I think CyDude16 can back me on this when I say that studying is frowned upon. Ridiculous amounts of hours spent on Facebook and Cyclone Fanatic however..

I'll keep that in mind. What I'm confused about is that the Admissions site says that the U drive and Richardson res halls are off limits to new students over 18, but available to continuing students. My friend really isn't a partier and he likes to eat healthy and work out, so UV might fit him well.

You are correct. Transfers that are 19 or older at the time they start school can't live in UDA or RCA buildings. (That's a new rule this year, because the return rate for the residence halls is so high; they're operating at ~96% capacity in the falls.)

Since you'll be 19 when you start, I highly recommend living in Buchanan Hall. I've lived there for the last two summers, and have lots of friends there during the school year. It's a great place. You get a good balance of those who like to party and those who like to study quietly, and you'll have no problems no matter which one you like to do. They're a relatively active community, but there's no freshmen in the building (except for about 10 kids in a learning community) so activities are a little more chill. You share a private bathroom with one other room, and floors 3-8 have their own kitchens. (1 and 2 use 3rd floor.) You're right across the street from the MU, 9 minutes from the UDCC, 3 from Linden, 5 from Oak-Elm and MWL, close to Hilton and Stephens, have a bus stop in front of your building and a huge parking lot in back, close to Campustown, etc and so on. It's a great place to live. You won't have any trouble making friends, either.

I can tell you anything you want about living on campus, PM me if you have more questions.

I was leaning towards Buch. because I liked life in a res hall, and its right there. The other seems pretty far from the main campus. What is the food/cooking/dining situation look like at Buch.?

There is no dining hall at Buchanan. I think there are kitchens in the common areas of each floor?

Can anyone tell me about like AGC and things like that thru ISU? I saw the green house project and concrete canoe on the CoE website, I'd like to get involved in things like that.

I assume I would use UD? That is the largest Dining hall correct? I think that is where I ate on the campus visit I took 2 years ago.

Buchanan seems to be kinda split evenly distance-wise between the UDCC or the MWL dining center

HOT TIP: Avoid references to that other in-state school affiliated with the Big Ten.
Well, I was born and raised a Hawkeye, but have always respected the clowns , and liked to see them do well. I looked past he surface of being a fan to see the best option for education, but many people have told me that they were able to stay Hawkeye fans on campus without being bothered.

Many Cyclone fans started out this way too, including myself. You will find that as you become more acclimated to ISU and develop a sense of pride in your university that you will eventually end up rooting for their athletic teams as well. Makes sense right? You love ISU so you want them to succeed.

There however are outliers, also known as tools.

UDCC is usually packed, however I would expect this to change as the MWL dining center is closed this year updating to basically be like the UDCC. Next year they are doing Oak-Elm.

Another choice for Buchanan residents is the MU food court right across Lincoln Way, I eat there often. You can use your meal plan to get a burger, personal pizza, burrito, chicken strips, and some other stuff.

As I said in my previous post, floors 3-8 in Buchanan have their own full kitchens. Floors 1 and 2 have access to the floor 3 kitchen, and the whole building has access to a full kitchen attached to the main lounge on the north side. It's about a 3-minute walk to the Linden dining center, which will remain open next year while they remodel Oak-Elm. It's about a 6-minute walk to Seasons Marketplace in the MWL commons (closed this year for construction), and about 10 minutes to the Union Drive Marketplace in the UDCC. Despite being the furthest away, most Buchanan residents who eat in the dining centers go to the UDCC. The walk isn't bad, you can always catch a bus, and lots of your fellow residents are going. There's usually an informal gathering of people around 6:30 that walk over and eat together, if that's something you enjoy. Buchanan residents typically show up at the tail end of the meal periods.

Like others said, you're also right across the street from the MU food court (where you can use meal plans). The MU also has a C-store/coffee shop and a Subway, which both take Dining Dollars. There's a Panda Express too, which will start taking Dining Dollars at the same time they open their new sushi bar next door, sometime in the middle of next fall. There are also C-stores in the UDCC and MWL.

Plenty of options!
