I'd have to go back and watch again to see how many opportunities in terms of playcalling were really "missed" by the offense (as in throwing it more downfield and across the middle, etc.), but I have a hunch that it's not as many as some here would think. Iowa's defense remains very good at neutering the opposing offense and forcing the offense to take what's there or risk throwing into heavy coverage, which includes a group of very opportunistic defensive backs that can easily make you pay. Of course you can find specific plays where there was open space that wasn't utilized, but that doesn't mean that it always would have worked that way. For that reason, I'll reserve full judgement on the offense until they get into Big 12 play.

Obviously today was still frustrating, though. The lack of urgency on the fourth quarter touchdown drive was maybe the most frustrated I've been with Campbell and company. His game management leaves a lot to be desired. Like some have said, though, coaches have strengths and weaknesses. If the recruiting and player development get Iowa State back to the point of making bowls (which I still think they will, next year if not this year), then the lackluster game management will be something I'm willing to accept as a weakness of his.

Well said.

It is their Super Bowl. And ya know what? They are correct. It is THAT important of a game. It rally does deserve the highest amount of focus and discipline and preparation. I highly doubt our staff will ever ‘get it’.
Not this staff anyway.

I’m going to buy an extra 6 pack of Ames Lager for next weekend. If we’re gonna pay for Jaylin Noel’s drops we may as well be able to drink enough to forget them!

New drinking game, shotgun an Ames Lager after every drop. You’ll pass out before the massive disappointment of scoring 10 points per game!

I would think our AD's competitiveness with winning would get in Campbell's ear about putting more importance in this game. I'm more willing to give more NIL $ to basketball instead of football based on results. If they don't give a **** about this game...why should I? (frustration talking)

Who says kohl isn't ready? I don't think it matters, it's preposterous to think he's going to sit behind Rocco for 3 years.
That eventually has to come up. Unless Rocco wins a ton this year then Kohl is starting next year right. He's too high of a recruit not to. Seems like one of them destined to transfer in this day and age. So if he's going to start next year, like mid season this year why not play him.

Nothing against Rocco. Not sure if it's him or calls that they never threw deep

Over matt trying to be kf. Its actually sad. **** Paul roaads would lay it out with 10xs less talent. But, we definitely have some nice things in basketball to look forward to

CMC hasn't been good in the series but CPR got some really marginal Iowa teams to beat and almost lost to a really bad one in 2012.

I've read season prediction posts for the last 6 months. Especially after the gambling stuff, the majority have been 3-4 wins, with a few as high as 6. Too many holes to fill. Leading up to today, I expected a loss in a close, low scoring game. So far everything seems to be on track. I guess I'm not sure why so many are freaking out.
You probably making sense

But losing closely again when the offense was most crap has people frustrated

Don’t even get me started on NIL right now. There are going to be people on this site and that are part of the Collective telling us that WE need to pay for better players or this is going to keep happening.

Tired - really, really tired - of this:

Wow! did Campbell really say that?

And yes, that is confusing. It doesn't give me confidence going forward. It says mediocrity is... OK?

I can understand not wanting to criticize your players. But where is the statement that I as the head coach made several mistakes, and that I want to see things change and get better. Just don't get that with CMC. Until it's far too late.

This is becoming unpleasant.

Don’t get bent of shape over coach speak. Most will never say anything of any real value.
I kind of wonder if MC is losing the players some now? If he is losing the fans, he has to be losing some of the locker room. It is coach speak, but it does nothing to inspire us fans.

Some call Matt great at communicating? I don't see it. Maybe he is good with the players, that's what we've been told. Honestly, he is a bit like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard anymore.

Campbell is different with the players than the fans. Most of what we see is coach speak and ********. But In the locker room coach is cussing up a storm. The locker room video of the Oregon game shows that clearly. I don’t think he has an issue inspiring his players. I just don’t think he gives a damn about the fans.

If I you were really good at a job for five years and then in year 6 you were Ok your bosses would be pretty forgiving . But if in year 7 If you didn't do a good job and then in year 8 I you were borderline incompetent all that goodwill would be gone. Then if you double downed and acted like you were doing a good job......well that **** wouldn't fly at most workplaces...It seems to me that is where we are at with CMC.

These last few Ferentz teams don't really set the world on fire

No but they've been slightly better than ISU on the whole. This game has come down to a handful of plays and ISU was the one who doesn't make them.
