This winter storm looks to be the worst of the season for parts of Iowa. The Gulf of Mexico is going to open up sending moisture streaming northward. There will be a nose of warm air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere, creating the scenario for a potentially significant freezing rain event over central/southern Iowa. The key to ice accumulations with this storm seems to be the placement of the sub-freezing surface temperatures. Surface temperatures may actually rise above freezing in the far south, where precipitation may turn into plain old rain. However, where surface temperatures remain at or below freezing, the ice accumulations could reach 0.5"+. North of the line, ice accumulations may be from 0.25-0.5" or more as well. Farther north into central/northern Iowa, precip should be more snow, with heavy accumulations possible... 6-10". Ames/Des Moines seems to be located in the area that will see potentially significant icing, followed by a few inches of snow.

My way-to-early prediction for Ames/Des Moines is 0.3" of ice accumulations followed by 5" of snow.

It better all be clear by Friday. I am driving back to Ames from Austin for Christmas and would very much like to not hassle with ice and snow...

But the Tuesday storm hasn't even finished yet...

Any idea when this storm will hit? Will we wake up Thursday to a blanket of ice, or will it hit just in time for the drive home after work?

I know what you mean... I'm going to try to leave Ames and go home on Thursday... and I'll probably have to leave really early to beat the worst conditions. I hope it slows down and doesn't start for a few extra hours. Once I'm home it can do whatever it wants! :biglaugh:

Right now the forecast is leaning towards Thursday afternoon/evening being the worst.

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about this. I have to travel to Omaha for work on Thursday and am starting to wonder if I should leave either on Wednesday night or really early Thursday morning...

It's currently looking like it will start in the early morning hours of Thursday

You both suck :biglaugh:

Well, I wouldn't be surprised to see it start Thursday morning, but the worst conditions will probably start at around noon, just because of the accumulations beginning to add up.

Maybe I'm just hoping that, so I can make it home in the morning??

Well, the NWS in Des Moines has issued a winter storm watch for much of Iowa. Rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow will all be possible with this storm. Exacts amounts will depend on the precise storm track. My current thoughts are that it will begin icing mid-Thursday morning and worsen from then on. Thursday night and early Friday will be a mess. Des Moines is right on the line, it seems, from getting either a lot of sleet, or a lot of freezing rain.

NWS Statement:
A MIXTURE OF FREEZING RAIN...SLEET AND SNOW IS POSSIBLE OVER THE
AREA THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT. AT THIS TIME...IT APPEARS THAT
SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 30 BETWEEN ONE QUARTER AND ONE HALF INCH OF ICE
ACCRUAL IS POSSIBLE...ALONG WITH UP TO AN INCH OF SLEET...AND
POSSIBLY A FEW INCHES OF SNOW. FREEZING RAIN WILL BE THE MAIN
PRECIPITATION TYPE SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 92. MAINLY HEAVY SNOW IS
POSSIBLE NORTH OF HIGHWAY 30...WHERE SNOWFALL OF GREATER THAN 6
INCHES IS POSSIBLE.

I'm thinking of leaving the current snow on the ground in the driveway so that it's easier to get up if we get freezing rain...good idea, or no?

I hate freezing rain, but if we get all snow on Thursday we will end up with close to a foot of snow.

Not sure which is worse?

Right now, if the cold air makes it in sooner then expected, we will be looking at 6-9 inches of snow. If we don't get any snow, it will be between .5-.75 inch of freezing rain.

It looks to me like it will be about a half inch of freezing rain and about 2-3 inches of snow, but the big ? is how soon the cold air gets here which is very hard to say at this point.

This would be for Des Moines, Ames will likly get more snow and less freezing rain.
