Three years ago today...

That "massive" contract made him the lowest paid coach in the Big 12 with a manageable buyout...

I don't understand the hindsight gripes about the contract. It's not like it handcuffed ISU like Ferentz's contract.

Agree. I am off the Rhoads bandwagon, but believe it was a solid move at the time. Good thinking outside the box by JP. Sometimes things don't work out.

It is our best chance of success in the short term. The long term is unknown at this point.

I think this is correct. If Pollard wanted to buy out CPR, he would. I think CPR is still here because Pollard thinks he can get it turned around next season, not because of the buyout.

I think the main reason he's still here is because JP made the hire.

At the time, it made sense and no one here complained. People were worried he would bolt if we didn't show him we appreciated what he's done. Also, at that time, you are seeing 3 bowl games in 4 years...you're seeing wins against Iowa, Texas, TCU, Nebraska, beat down of a ranked tech team, and then the best win in school history.

Funny how everyone here was going crazy when we locked him up. Not saying Rhoads hasn't deserved criticism, but I had no problem with this extension at the time.
JP and others must not have checked out the recruiting that much. Paul's problem is recruiting talent as much as anything. You can get a two or three star, but you need to make sure they are a Sims or Knott type mentality. We picked up too many wayward sons and not enough pure football Levi Peters.

It's not an AD's job to give out extensions based on projections of players who've yet to even play a down on the field. JP rewarded Rhoads based on results, the ability to win a big game, and the fact that attendance was at an all time high. Iowa State football was to the point where you didn't want to miss a game because you might miss somethign special.

No doubt everybody was caught up in the big wins and bowl games, and an extension was certainly needed. But it's the a.d.'s job not to get too caught up in the euphoria and look at the whole situation realistically, and a good part of that was to realize that CPR was yet to win with a majority of own players, which really doesn't happen until years 3-5. I'm wondering how many coaches get 10 year extensions even before their bowl game in year 3, especially when it's a first time head coach with such a short resume as a head coach. I'm wondering how many of the established great head coaches even have 10 year contracts.

We were right at the time to extend, but no way should isu given him 10 years.

This was my exact sentiment at the time. And was about to say it but you beat me to it Rulzzz.

Just wanted to take a walk down memory lane and think about how big of a downfall we've endured after being so optimistic.

It was either give Rhoads a 10 year contract at the lowest per year salary in the conference or jump his pay up considerably to match whatever Wisconsin was offering.

We took the stability gamble and it appears to have blown up in our face for the time being.

To the guy saying "pollard's job was to not get caught up in euphoria, BLAH, blah, blah". If Pollard lost Rhoads to Wisconsin which probably would have happened, you would have wanted his head on a platter instead of just giving a ****** contract to the next guy in line.

You're going to have to provide some documentation (preferably quotes from Barry) before I'll believe Barry Alvarez was seriously considering hiring a coach with a 3 year history as a head coach at any level and mostly using previous coaches players.

Because at that time, anyone who would have questioned it would have been labeled a troll.

Just like today where anyone that isn't 100% on the "Fire Rhoads!!!!!11!1!1" bandwagon is automatically a Rhoads lover, apologist, Iowa state football hater, loser, and troll.

The 10 years is pretty insignificant. It's more about his buyout (which is a fraction of the $20 mil). It's like an NFL contract...Cutler signed a 7 year/$128 mil contract but its a fraction of that for the Bears to part ways with him.

I'm not sure why people get caught up in the 10 years. Rhoads is the lowest paid coach in the Big 12 with an average,or less than average, buyout. The rest really doesn't matter.

I get thrown into this all the time, and you know my stance on Coach PauL Rhoads.

Like Paul Chyrst?

Chryst is 6-7, 7-6, 6-6 (19-19) in his 3 seasons at Pitt. Looks awfully familiar to Rhoads' first 3.

Would you set up a 10-year payment plan on a below average quality vehicle, knowing that its likelihood of breaking down or losing value was high?

Well if I knew that the plan was for the same total money as the 5 year payment plan and I could only pay off a fraction of the balance if it broke down before the 10 years was up I would probably consider it.

Serious question, how much has Peters seen the field besides special teams? I found his name in the participation reports for NDSU and KSU, and I recall he spent a lot of time on the sidelines not in pads so I guess he was injured. His Cyclones.com bio says he played some in 2013 - 15 tackles, a forced fumble against Tech - but not much else.

Well Rhoads was an above average (for ISU's standards) vehicle when the contract was signed. I know we have a lot of Monday morning QBs on this site but unfortunately the real world doesn't come with a crystal ball to predict future performance.

And in the real world, Rhoads' contract isn't that bad for ISU.

But to your question, I probably would if I'm paying less per year than everyone else is for their vehicle and I could cost effectively get out of the contract.
