Three years ago today...

At the time, it made sense and no one here complained. People were worried he would bolt if we didn't show him we appreciated what he's done. Also, at that time, you are seeing 3 bowl games in 4 years...you're seeing wins against Iowa, Texas, TCU, Nebraska, beat down of a ranked tech team, and then the best win in school history.

Funny how everyone here was going crazy when we locked him up. Not saying Rhoads hasn't deserved criticism, but I had no problem with this extension at the time.

No. Outside of kool-aid land, there were many people asking what Rhoads had done to justify such a massive contract.

It wasn't what he had done; it was out of fear he would move on to another job. At the time, most were pretty nervous that he would leave, and pretty thrilled with the contract extension. As was mentioned earlier, hindsight is 20/20.

I would hardly call a contract that kept him the lowest paid coach in the league "massive".

Thanks for bringing this up, OP. I don't recall it ever being discussed.

You might have missed the part where I said outside of kool-aid land...

Go it. Funny thing is, even on CF, there is typically varying opinions on every subject. However on the contract extension, there was 100% buy-in. Like I said, hindsight is 20/20, but when that contract was announced, I heard from no one, nor did I read anything questioning the move by JP.

I figured this was going to be about hiring Messingham, not giving Rhoads a contract extension. IMO, the Mess hire was ultimately much more of a negative for the program that the Rhoads contract.

Yes, at least the contract extension made sense then. I never liked Messing-up.

That "massive" contract made him the lowest paid coach in the Big 12 with a manageable buyout...

I don't understand the hindsight gripes about the contract. It's not like it handcuffed ISU like Ferentz's contract.

I think this is correct. If Pollard wanted to buy out CPR, he would. I think CPR is still here because Pollard thinks he can get it turned around next season, not because of the buyout.
