I don't know much either but I would guess our tennis team is not powerful.

Isn't our tennis program just about the worst in the country? Maybe it's some other obscure sport that I'm thinking of, but I thought we pretty much never win a tennis match.

Also, why do they rank so many teams?!?

Yeah, our tennis team is not that good if you look at the historical records in the schedule are at cyclones.com

The thing about tennis is a lot of small D1 schools have good tennis programs because it doesn't require a lot of money. Pepperdine, Radford, Furman... all of these smaller schools traditionally have very good tennis programs. Having a warmer climate also helps quite a bit.

I know it will get me in trouble, but the main reason we have a women's tennis team is Title IX.

Actually that is probably the reason we don't have men's tennis.

Actually, I think you're both right.

I think they are, however, considering we didn't even have a Tennis team until not to long ago I would have to say that title IX is the reason we have a womens team.

Pretty sure in the mid-1990s we dropped men's tennis and added women's. I may be wrong on the exact dates. It seems a result of Title IX. I would love it if our team became competitive and they did actually win a conference match or 2 last year, so they may be improving.

Historically speaking, ISU tennis has been pretty horrible. But the past few years they have made huge strides. They have a regionally ranked player and doubles team. Coach Espinosa is getting better recruits and is a much better coach than the previous one. I have watched pretty much every home match the last 3 years and I could see the team competing for the middle of the big 12 this year.

That's good to hear. I root for all ISU teams and would love for us to be competitive here.

Assistant Coach Chris Williams was a coach of mine in high school, so hopefully ISU succeeds under him and Espinosa so my tennis education looks better.

I admit, I don't know much about Tennis, but this is a embarrassing quote.

"The Iowa State tennis team came within a few points of upsetting No. 69 Minnesota Sunday afternoon, but fell short 4-3 in its spring dual-match opener."

Cyclone Tennis Keeps No. 69 Minnesota on the Ropes - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports

I had the same thought when I saw this yesterday. At first I thought it was a typo and UM was #6 or #9. I actually spent the time to look up the link with National Rankings. It was true. For some lame reason, tennis publishes a Top 75 ranking. wtf is the purpose of that?

The cyclones.com story should have just read that ISU came close to upsetting UM. To list the #69 ranking is so weak to be laughable.

I just imagine Beavis saying, "you said 69, huh huh".
