Seems like the nickname should have come out in an interview article by Rob Gray before it became something for the PR guy to use.

I'm assuming they are approved/suggested by the player. (No insider knowledge)
I'm guessing if you go to that one website that sells player gear you'll find a Big Dog t-shirt for sale. There was a student at last night's game rocking a big Rob Energy shirt last night, the one with the fro and headband.
