Not exactly sure.
If the Miles Inn is on the east side by Morningside College, I know of what you speak. They were very good loose meat with no sauce ingredients. The meat was steamed and in a SS hooded tub right next to the draw beer at the bar. The meat kept moist due to the steaming. Delectable washed down with a draft.
Moist meat you say? @Angie What's your thoughts on moist meat for loose meats?

Made-Rite started in Muskieville. It was a pioneer in franchising. The only problem, the Angell family asked for a next to nothing franchising fee.

Ray Kroc did business with Made-Rite restaurants, studied the business and realized the big money was in franchising. He hooked up with the McDonald brothers and $$$$$$$$$$$$.

The Made-Rite cooking technique was banned by local departments of health. Raw burger was put in one end of a cooking vat and slid to the cooked, serving end. What could go wrong?

The “sauce” in a maidrite is basically hamburger grease.

The sauce in a sloppy joe is tomato based.

They call them taverns in northwest Iowa. Not sure if they mean maidrites or sloppy joes though.

Look up the copycat Maid Rite recipe and you'll see that it's not just the grease that flavors it. Easy crock pot meal and we finish them in the oven to melt the cheese.

Some of you people are sick, sick I tell you. Maid rites are loose dry hamburger. Maid Rights have hamburger, ketchup, mustard, onion, brown sugar, and lemon juice. None of that boughten manwich or soup crap stirred in.
Not reading the whole thread, I'm sure this has been mentioned, but aren't the best Maid-rites steamed and nice and moist? That's how I remember them!

The steam and moisture make the trademark Maid-rite? Yes?

My vote is that a “loose meat” sandwich is any sandwich with ground beef that is not formed into a patty. Therefore, both sloppy joe and a maid-rite would both be loose meat sandwiches.

Sloppy joes have the tomato based sauce, whereas maid-rites were a chain that sold sandwiches without the sauce and had toppings like pickles, onions etc.

Best maid rite I ever made was just salt and onion powder. Cooked the beef in a skillet with half a cup of water and using a spatula or wooden spoon to work the beef into as small of pieces possible.
