Colt McCoy was named the starting quarterback for No. 3 Texas on Monday, ending a battle with fellow freshman Jevan Snead to replace Vince Young.
McCoy, who redshirted last year while Young was leading Texas to its first national championship in 35 years, will take the first snap of his career in Saturday's season opener against North Texas.
Snead skipped the last half of his senior year in high school to join the Longhorns for spring drills.
"Our competition brought out the best in us," McCoy said. "I feel like I had a really good fall camp. This whole week is going to be awesome."
