The fix is easy. Don't have it in the warm period of spring. Have it in winter for lowest chance of riots or move it to homecoming week. The riots happen due to the combo of alcohol + warm weather + stir crazy after winter. Eliminate any one of the three and you have a great chance of no riot. Removing alcohol has already proven to be the hardest thing to change so try the other two.

Again I ask, which one of those three factors is caused by VEISHEA? The only thing VEISHEA contributes is additional college-aged kids, which if you scale back to just the Saturday events, probably decreases dramatically.

Looks like I may be in the minority, but I think changing the name is a good idea. Just hearing the word VEISHEA makes me want to crack a beer, and I think it does have a certain stigma to it. We'll have to wait and see what happens next year.

I'm with you on that. The name "VEISHEA" is heavily associated with rioting. As much as I hate the term "rebranding" that is exactly what needed to be done with VEISHEA in order to keep it around. I think this is a great first step for fixing the festival formerly known as VEISHEA.

No matter what is done, students are still going to take a week out of April and party. It wont change for several years.

I was getting ready to drag the couch outside and pop open a Zima after just looking at the thread name.

That's fine. They don't need to kill the party. They need to kill the association with rioting.

Okay, thats what I meant to say. I could care less if people get hammered the whole week, just be smart about it. Its crazy how some students think that you have to act like a complete ******* when you party, either during VEISHEA or not.

Keep the name, give the police the right to shoot with extremely prejudice at even the idea of a riot. And indestructible stop signs made out of the same thing our goalposts are. Problem solved. Now where's the beer?

Does the task force think the students are stupid or something? They must. If the only thing they do is a name change it is not going to fool anyone. Whatever they end up calling it won't change what it really is and the reputation of "that week". This whole name change idea, kind of reminds me of:

Guaranteed to fail...

Reading the article, it doesn't seem like this is the only change that will happen. Just the first that has been announced.
