Tanning beds safe?

Tanning is a defense mechanism for your skin. All sun/artificial sun exposure causes damage. Will you die from skin cancer if you fake bake occasionally? Probably not (the number of people that actually die from skin cancer is fairly low).

Will you age your skin prematurely? Yes, without question.

Probably not a big problem for you if you tan before a wedding or vacation, but if you tan regularly, you are damaging your skin a little each time you do it.

Did it once a week for about 10 yrs of my life. Wish I could go back and not do it. Just had an atypical mole hacked out of my back and will likely be visiting the derm yearly for the rest of my life.

Not worth the risk IMO.

My boss does every year before he goes to the Carribean every winter and he is 60. Ya its still weird.

I'll give him a pass before a vacation. Nothing ruins a tropical vacation more than getting burnt to a crisp on day 1.

You could always get a spray tan:

But seriously, I would go without it in general.

The World Health Organization has classified tanning beds as a carcinogen in the same class as tobacco. The American Academy of Dermatology strongly urges people not to tan.

I would say the majority of highly educated people in health professions do not tan naturally or artificially and wear high amounts of SPF lotion when they are exposed to sun. That said, I have known physicians who tan artificially.

It seems the damage from tanning is a cumulative effect. So if you do it sporadically there probably isn't much risk unless your genetics predispose you to the dangers. I have used tanning beds before but I have stopped since I have seen two friends in their early twenties diagnosed with melanoma.

I understand that but there's certainly no worry of harm from a few sessions before lying out in the equatorial sun for a week.

If you regularly go to a tanning bed please don't speak to me.
