I was for the remodel, but not the new additions. Basically people in the UD area should just have walked over to Lied. Lied was only busy for a 2-3 hour period everyday.

No surprise. It takes a long time to thoroughly destroy a landmark building, let alone rebuild it.

Are there any pictures online of what the whole complex (State and Beyer) look like as of now? I haven't been back to ISU since February and I think there was a skywalk then but couldn't remember what else..

Kind of interested to see what the inside looks like

I for one am excited about the new facility, the wooden floor bball courts will be awesome, and the weight/workout equipment and area looks to be more extensive than Leid. Leid has been getting busier and busier every year with the increasing enrollment, I've been going to Ames Racquet and Fitness lately but when I used to got to Leid I can remember plenty of times where I either couldn't get on a bench press or had to wait a substantial time, really don't want to think about how busy it will be this year with the record number of new students.

Not too mention the basketball courts are always full from about 6-9PM every night. And now that they scan ISU cards i can't use my old ISU card to get in I had to buy Alumni Association and pay the fee for the rec. I hope they don't do that to State Gym.

As of winter break, State Gym and Beyer will only be accessible to card holders with the only access point being at State Gym if I'm not mistaken.

And you should have to pay to use the facilities. No different than getting a membership at Ames Racquet & Fitness or a YMCA. Iowa State letting just anyone into Beyer pisses me off. They should be paying to use it just like students do.

I think you were suppose to be an Alumni, which I am, we should have some sort of benefits. I would rather pay ISU than Ames Raquet and Fitness so thats what I do, but if I want to go shoot hoops or something I should be able to use one of the many empty indoor courts ISU has, if I am an Alumni. I believe the price comes to around $30 month for membership after Alumni fees and the $15 year card fee plus whatever the year or semester fees are for the rec.

I don't understand the Alumni Association side but I do know students get hit with a $71? fee for recreation each semester. I'm not opposed to alumni being able to use it but they should be paying at least that same amount.

The $89.95 credit students are getting is the increase that was to pay for State Gym usage. Since it isn't usable, students aren't getting charged for it (hence the credit).

I donate some money to our YMCA. During the day it's never busy. Should I be able to just walk in and shoot hoops? No.

The alumni association has yearly fees or for around $1000 you get lifetime membership. This is a requirement before any Alumni can even get a membership to Lied. Then you have to pay the rec. fees $60 semester or $30 month...other plans available as well. This I'm fine with but believe Alumni should be able to use some of the services or buildings free of charge. This being a benefit of being a Alum. Remember We all paid the fee while we were in school as well, and pay plenty of taxes for living in Ames.

And I would say yes you should be able to use the Y if you have donated money to it. Depending on the amount of course. ISU I have 4 years into, and will be paying for it the next 20.

The fee paid for you then. My fee pays for me to use the facility this year. Next year I won't be paying the fee so I don't expect something I'm not paying for. I'm also going to guess Iowa State Rec Services sees little to no money from taxes paid by residents of Ames.

Heck, every student should get free season tickets considering part of the "Activity fee" goes to athletics (somewhere between $0-$90 according to a presentation I sat through Sunday..it was a $90 fee if I remember right that was split between athletics and something else).

I think we'll agree to disagree on this, The Community/State does support the school in general, how the money breaks out idk, don't care for that matter. If the facilities are there, they might as well make some not all available to the Community. This is what Beyer & State used to offer, Lied was seperate. Like I have said I don't mind paying because the service they offer is what I want, but its still something I didn't use to have to pay for.

And Yes Iowa State should give students free tickets, other schools do this, the new scanner system may put a control in place where that could be done efficiently. Before the ticket could just be given away or sold.

So should Ames High or Ames Middle School be open to shooting hoops and stuff all the time since those are directly funded by taxpayers?

And we can still sell tickets...just a couple hoops to jump through if you do it ahead of time. You're screwed trying to sell it in the parking lot though.
