If you have experience with Starlink, would you recommend it? Any issues? What should I be thinking about before making the investment? TIA.

My main use will be in the RV Village for tailgates during football season, but will probably use it for other events and activities through the summer, such as neighborhood tailgates in my driveway.

It’s been great for us ….. speeds that are good enough for steaming, work from home, and gaming teenagers, at the same time. The latter ***** about the ping, lol.

It would be a great way to stream YTTV in Ames on game days. And any other RV outings.

Used it while building a house until we got fully settled and then switched to line of sight service. Never an issue.

Left it in our RV over the winter and was still able to stream TV inside the house while finishing construction. WIFI modem has a longer reach than I had expected.

Download usually 80-160 mbps
Upload consistently 20 mbps

No cloudy day problems?

Does it have a wide selection of channels, including CBS Sportsnet for watching Canadian football?

No issues with clouds. Never had it go out even during heavy rain this sprimg or the blizzards this winter.

Starlink is an internet service only. Will need a secondary TV service like YouTubeTV.

Can I use the same equipment for tailgating and in my home? Does it have a built in router so others can access the internet too?

Seems like this might be a good time to cut the cord with Mediacom.

Definitely want to dump DISH-TV at the tailgates. So touchy and unreliable.

//EDITED to remove outdated hardware information//

Will need the Starlink Roam plan if you plan to use it at other locations. That's $150/month vs $135/month for the plan that limits your service to a single location.

Downside to the Roam plan is if you're in a city with a bunch of people using the service, you can/will have your speed limited during peak usage. Around 8pm at your house don't be surprised to see your download speed drop to 20-40 mbps.

The modem is connected to the dish with a proprietary cable. Modem is wifi only unless you buy their adapter to add hardwire connection. Yes, others can connect if you give them login information.

You should buy a second cable so you can take the modem and dish to RV lots for example without having to pull the cable back out too.

There’s no Ethernet port on the modem? So you can’t hook up your own mesh WiFi without an adapter?

The new Gen 3 Dishy has RJ45 connections for the cable connection from dish to the new router which is now Wifi 6.

Dang I wish I had Gen 3. Would have installed it in the house rather than my other internet service. Mainly for faster upload speed. Lot of large OneDrive uploads for work.

I went through this same decision last year for tailgating. Had a portable DISH set up but was intrigued by the Starlink ROAM plan. We used it all camping/tailgate season last year and it was fantastic. Never had any delays or interruptions during games and you can turn it on and off as needed (per month basis) like dish. We have the Gen2 system. I turned it "off" last November after tailgating was over and just now turned it back "on" for the season. Had to go through about 30 min of updates to start, but now we are ready for camping and tailgating!

We will probably use it for a few more years before upgrading to see how they improve things as they are already on Gen 3.

I was considering doing this last year as well but wasn't sure how reliable it would be. It sounds like you had a good experience. How many devices did you have connecting to it? My plan was hook a couple TV's up it and then post the wifi code at our tailgate for whoever.

We usually had 2-3 TVs, 2 iphones, a tablet for music and then a temp/humidity sensor for the inside of the RV (to make sure dogs are comfy while we are in the game). All that and never a glitch at the games. I dont post it up so just anyone can log into it though. I will give it to a few close friends, but I don't need rando's logging into my wifi.

I was on the Starlink site about a month ago and it indicated there was a wait list in the Midwest for residential plans. Didn't check the roaming option. My sone lives in remote Northern NM and has been using for about a year. Spendy but very reliable.

We have it at our house and love it.

BUT if there's a problem there is no customer service and it takes forever to get things corrected.

For example when our house got hit by lightning it ruined the Starlink Power box. We had to go in the the account and file a ticket. 2 days later they responded with trouble shooting things they wanted me to do. I did them and still nothing. Relayed my findings and 2 days later they gave me more trouble shooting to do. I flat out told them resetting it isn't going to work because they power box is fried and I know this because there is no power light. Even sent them a pic. Finally they agreed to send us new hardware, but it was a lower level hardware than we had upgraded to 6 months ago.

Other than that **** the internet is great.

Related to using Starlink for tailgating. Has anyone used their home WIFI internet to stream at games?

I have Verizon (but T-Mobile works the same) and the gateway is an 8 x 6 x 6 cube so very moveable. Does the gateway re-calibrate if location changes to pick up WIFI towers near stadium? Or does Verizon/T-Mobile restrict to a home location.
