Flight prices go way up the middle of March; we were looking at $400+ / per x 5 = $2000, plus all the ancillary expenses. I'm sick that we have to drive, but we'll make it up to the kids with all the cool stuff we'll do while there! I was just looking at the route down and trying to see where we could make some interesting stops; I'm not seeing anything to do in Amarillo, TX!

Hey Fred! I asked for desirable things to see, which doesn't include people from Baxter!

Hey, all Baxter people aren't that bad, just most Hawk fans. lol!

Just hope you don't end up with 20" of snow in Amarillo, like we endured when we traveled to the Insight.com bowl game. That was after getting stuck in a ice storm in Oklahoma City.

Sounds like you are taking the same route we took when we went to Arizona. On the way, back you might check Highway 54 in Kansas, if I remember right it is a shorter distance.

I don't know how in shape your wife and kids are or if you would want to brave it but depending on the snow pack, climbing Mt. Humphrey is a blast if you are in flagstaff. At least go to the snow bowl outlook area and admire the view. Don't ride your brakes on the way down either, you will fry them. The Lowell Observatory is pretty fun, but you should make the trip up to the Grand Canyon.
You have to check out Granny's Closet-my favorite place to eat/watch a game/take a date.

Sedona is a blast. Eat breakfast at the Coffee Pot there if you get the chance. Yes, Pink Jeep tours are pretty much a given. Bundle up though because the weather tends to change.

I loved Flagstaff when I lived there. Two and half hours from Phoenix and two and a half hours from Vegas. I could snowboard and golf in the same day!!

Did you guys check allegiant air out of cedar rapids?

I was just checking their fares and they seem to be $240- $270 per person for mid march.

Also once in the Phoenix area I recommend tortilla flats. It is a scenic drive in the mountains with lots of areas to explore.

I'm going to AZ at the end of march to catch the end of spring training. I've never been to a spring training game before. Should i buy my tix online or just at the door when i get there? I'd like the GA lawn seating. Do those usually sell out or anything? Any advice is appreciated

Depends on which team you want to see. The Cubs tickets are hit or miss. If you go during the week, you should have no problem getting tickets but weekend games tend to be sold out. Never buy tickets online, it is a scam.

Just wanted to thank everybody who gave me ideas for the Spring Break trip! We survived the long road trip, thru Oklahoma City and Amarillo on the way down and thru Denver / Nebraska on the way back. Perfect weather all week; enjoyed Sedona immensely (kids loved Slide Rock) and the Grand Canyon was all we could hope for! Slid down to Phoenix at the end of the week and took in a Cubs victory! I used many of the ideas offered in this thread and for that I offer a hearty THANK YOU.

I really didn't know where I wished to retire to (many years away) until this week, but now I know. You can all come visit me in Flagstaff! Now I just need to figure out how to get ISU and Northern Arizona to schedule each other....

You should have taken your kids to Lake Havasu during spring break, that would have been a sight :wideeyed::jimlad::biglaugh:

Wondering if you were in a Mini-Van and had ISU plates with car-topper on top? We headed into Grand Canyon National Park on Friday and passed a Van with ISU plates leaving and then on our way up through Ok. City and KC we passed a Cyclone Van with license plates Captimm I believe.

Wasn't us, as we were down in the Phoenix area on Friday at the Carefree Resort & Spa. We drove home thru Denver rather than Oklahoma City and our personalized plates on the family mini-van read "ICCYFAN"...

Did you hike the Bright Angel trail while in the Grand Canyon?

I have always said that if I had to live anywhere else it would be Arizona. Like you said Flagstaff is pretty awesome.
