I've been to Splash several times over the years as my wife used to work near there. We often sat in the bar and had wine and appetizers. For a seafood restaurant, our favorite of the apps is their beef carpacio. Reggae music in the bar and a nice wine selection. Full dinner is spendy, but a nice place. By the way, they send you a card on your birthday for a free entree (up to $32). If you want another nice place on the east side of the river, I highly recommend Lucca's.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. We have reservations at splash. Hoping for a fun night. Money was not an issue tonight so shouldn't be a problem.

Get there early since there's a show at the Civic Center - Splash has no parking of it's own and there's not much other than street immediately nearby.

I'd go down the parking ramp off 3rd and Court. Easy walk back after your show. Probabaly $5 event parking.

BTW - echo most of the above. Splash is great.

I liked Splash's food alot, but found the decor on the inside to be VERY 1980s. It felt like we went through a worm hole into the Reagan era.

I liked the Waterfront better but its not close to the performance in question.
I frankly dont have a very distinguishing palate I suppose because you could make me about as happy at Red Lobster as either of these places.

I'd rather go to Court Ave brew pub when in that neck of the woods anyway!

Thread jack.

But Bonefish out off George Mills is pretty good seafood. Not sure you'd call it a "Seafood" restaurant, but seems to be their niche.

Been to many "high end" seafood restaurants in the USA. Generally, metropolitan seafood is overpriced. Spent $750 @McCormick & Schmitt for family gathering and had worst scallops in my life (KC, Mo.). Once you have had fresh ocean seafood along the coasts, it is hard to go back to a restaurant in the interior of the country and order anything out of the ocean--it is not possible to duplicate that flavor. Another generalization--the higher the price, the blander the food and the less portion size.

Splash has had a very positive write-up in some national foodie type magazine. It is highly regarded. I've eaten there a few times and have always been thoroughly impressed. My issue is that my wife doesn't like seafood, so doesn't provide me a lot of opportunities to go there.

I've never had seafood at 801 Steak and Chop, but have always thoroughly enjoyed my meals there. I love the atmosphere/décor and the service is top notch! Best steaks in town.

Not trying to be snotty, but dropping $100 for two at a fine dining establishment is pretty typical in a city Des Moines size. Splash and 801 are two of the finest restaurants in Des Moines. Yes, Centro is less expensive, but it not meant to be on the same level of dining as the other two.

Bonefish - this is a chain restaurant - not a local place like Waterfront or Splash or Centro. Just pointing out for clarification as this matters to some.

There was a question about a new "Beef Burger" restaurant downtown. It is located where Trattorria (sp?)used to be. On 4th Street, kind of across the street from The Royal Mile, next to/behind The Surf Shack. . Never tried it, so can't provide any feedback.

True, you generally can't duplicate it, but Splash has their seafood flown in daily from my understanding so there is a reason it is very good (and priced accordingly).

Folks who are interested in the restaurant scene in central Iowa, which of course focuses on Des Moines but also includes Ames, will want to watch for the publication in the Register of their listing of the 100 best restaurants in this area. I am not sure when the publication will take place, but I think I recall that it will be soon, possibly before the end of the year. Those who don't get the paper can probably find it online at the Register's web site. Maybe someone else can tell us the exact date of publication.

Ah yes.. the Rag's 100 best.

Which seems to closely resemble the registers adversiting revenue leaders....

I was dumb enough a few years back to play along with the Rags "100 foods in Iowa to eat before you die".

Got through about 10 of them in various locals before I realized the author was obviously a cruel prankster.

Maybe the author typo'd the article title. It should of been "100 foods in Iowa to eat if you want to die."

These restaurants are supposedly decided (voted on) by the readers, not the Register's staff; now if you are cynical enough to believe that the Register will stack the deck, well, nothing I can say will change your mind.
