There will be a solar eclipse occurring this Sunday evening.

Solar Eclipse this Weekend - NASA Science

It will be partial for the upper midwest with Iowa seeing ~70-75% eclipse beginning at ~7:30p and effectively ending at sunset. Those in SE Iowa will see the sun set before the maximum eclipse occurs.

A full solar eclipse will occur from parts North Texas back to North California.

There is a chance for clouds/rain on Sunday (in Iowa/Minnesota) but at this point it looks like it'll be out of here by the evening. It'll be a close call though.

Is this the kind where I make a hole in one piece of cardboard and let the sunlight go through to another piece of cardboard and I "see" the eclipse that way?

I remember doing that when I was about 10 and I thought it was the stupidest ******* thing I'd ever allowed myself to be talked into doing.

It's OK, stare directly at the sun for as long as you like.

Is there a way to look at it without doing this?

This is only because it actually was the stupidest thing we'd ever allowed ourselves to be talked into. BTW- I've heard you can use a welder's helmet if you happen to have one laying around.
