I think it’s to give teams some extra time after conference tourneys to be eligible COVID wise.

if I were a coach of a selected team, after the celebration of being selected, we'd talk about laying low until it's time to go...all.staff, athletes, coaches. I know they have been doing that all season, but ONE person messing up and it could be over.

Guessing it has to with the first 4 games allowing them to play Thursday rather than i believe Tuesday in the past. Cuts down on possible exposure by not requiring those teams to travel twice. Why they decided to move everything back instead of simply playing those games on Wednesday, I have no idea. The first four have been moved from Dayton to the same sight as the rest of their regional correct?

Why isn’t the first round starting on Thursday this year?

The decision is tied to coronavirus testing protocols.

“The 2021 March Madness schedule is primarily a function of the health and safety protocols for all participants, respecting conference tournaments, balancing time away from campus for college student-athletes, competitive considerations for a national championship and fan engagement during a relatively traditional tournament timetable,” Dan Gavitt, the NCAA’s senior vice president of basketball, said in a January statement.

Moving back the play-in games till Thursday and the first round till Friday also allows the NCAA a bigger window to replace any qualifying teams that do not meet the testing protocols. A team can be replaced in the field up until Tuesday at 6 p.m. Eastern time.

Isn't obvious, St Patty's Day!

It gives all the coaches and players a full 36 hours to recover after getting blasted Wednesday night. Wouldn't want a player (or Rick Pitino) yakking on the NCAA Logo. Not a good look.

So, because of the Justin Bieber wannabe at Iowa, and his issue with sea breezes; everyone has to suffer.
