Iowa State University: Former Cyclone softball coach Rowe testifies in termination case

By TOM WITOSKY • [email protected] • November 20, 2008

Ruth Crowe's controversial ending to her nine-year tenure as Iowa State's softball coach - which included objecting to a pregame prayer at Baylor and branding Texas A&M fans "dumb farmers" - is on trial.

She is now fighting for back pay and damages for wrongful dismissal.

Crowe testified Wednesday that her firing on June 1, 2005, came without warning from former athletic director Bruce Van De Velde, who asked her to resign, then terminated her with one year left on her contract........

She had a 166-244 record and insulted almost every school we played and she doesn't think that her dismissal is "justified".

BTW- Since she was dismissed 3 years ago, the Cyclones have a 97-100 record with they best year being last year.

You know, coming from at school like ISU, calling another team's fans dumb farmers just sounds absolutely ridiculous. The only bad thing BVDV did in this situtation was not fire her sooner apparently.

I had the opportunity to meet and spend some time with Coach Crowe where I used to work back in 2002. We hired her to speak at a coaches clinic that we put on, and I had to correspond with her, give her rides, bring her materials, etc. I would have to say that she was one of the most unpleasant people I have ever had the misfortune of knowing. Never had a nice thing to say. Considered everyone around her to be her subordinate. Very little in the way of common decency. Generally a ****. I see it as a great example of personal restraint that people put up with her for as long as they did.

So, if they reinstate her as the Softball coach, than what happens to the current coach? There is no cause to fire the current softball coach for any reason. I doubt a normal person would not want to come back to a situation where most of your colleagues testified against you. Let's hope she is more normal than I think she is.

Iowa is a right to work state, you can be fired with no warning for any reason. I am not sure how people sue for this kinda stuff.

Crowe claims in her lawsuit that Van De Velde dismissed her not because of problems within the program, but because she raised questions about the school's lack of commitment to Title IX, particularly concerning what she characterized as substantially lower salaries for coaches of women's teams and a 3-to-1 difference in money spent on recruiting male athletes.

Umm yeah, sorry this is life, mens sports make money to pay for your womens teams. I hate this argument that sports are not fair.

Let me get this straight:
- Her job performance was terrible.
- Her players and co-workers didn't get along with her.
- She refused to participate in Athletic Department functions.

but ISU didn't have the right to fire her? Give me a break.

Also, in the last 15 years ISU eliminated Men's Swimming and Baseball, and added Women's soccer, but they are not doing enough for Women's sports.

How in the hell did she win this lawsuit.

I too have heard nothing good about her from people who just met her in passing.

I would assume that the language in her contract would need to be considered first. And, with Title IX issues coming up, anything is possible.
