Not that SDW isnt worthy of playing at a high level program but its kind of telling how badly we missed with some of the other recruits in the beginning. Sledge is now at a DIII school-
http://www.nhregister.com/sports/20...ansfer-tavon-sledge-hammering-the-competition and Okoro hardly plays for a horrible Rutgers team.
I remember when Sledge was thought to be a possible starter from Day 1 in the second year of the Hoiberg era given he would have been the only point guard around. Funny how you can synthesize one of those out of a scoring guard (Chris Allen, Naz Long) and even post players (Royce White, Georges Niang) when you want to... and how far more freshmen are away from being able to run the point for a major-conference team meaning to compete (Monte, at least to start last year, and while I think Custer will be a valuable piece going forward, he's not ready to fill Man-Man shoes yet).
I think looking at Fred's recruits out of high school is also telling, however. Frankly, he's not been that great at it, and particularly at first. Almost all of the major contributors to his first few teams came from the transfer market. We'd be nowhere near where we are right now if we wanted to go the "right way" and go only with high school students. Frankly, some of the misses are on the embarrassing side when you go back to look at them...
2010 (kind of a McD class but why not)
---
Railey = small playing time on a bad team, off-the-court trouble, eventually transfered
McKnight = never went anywhere, transfered, didn't he just help beat KSU at LBSU?
Ejim = holy heck this one was a hit, but maybe really more of a McD/Otz guy
Godfrey = actually a pretty good player that year, would have liked to have kept him
2011
---
Elgin Cook = (who? I don't even remember this one, but Scout gave him a 90)
Gibson = started for awhile, but then never saw the court, ended up at Oakland
Sledge = left for Iona, and now evidently is at a D3 school, so, yeah, that didn't go well
2012
---
Niang = this one alone almost forgives all the nonsense above
Okoro = not playing for a bad Rutgers team, so, yeah, pretty sure this one was a miss
SDW = Top 150 player, decent shooter, but never seemed to put it all together
Naz Long = the "worst" recruit of the four here, but, yeah, starting to become an above-average Big 12 guard and useful "3&D" guy, which is precisely what you need for a Hoiball NBA offense/defense
2013
---
Thomas = maybe hasn't lived up to all expectations, but still developing as a shooter
Morris = damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
2014
---
Custer = jury is still way out on him, but watching him hit some threes on Drake felt good
(yes, the Greek, but I'm only counting traditional high school players here)
Couple trends
-early Fred recruiting on high school kids was rough
-no way the team recovers with those players at the core of the roster early on
-Ejim was something of a gift from the previous regime
-has picked up since we made the NCAA tournament a few times
-"hitting" on Niang, Long, Morris, and Thomas makes up for the misses
-most teams probably have roughly an equal number of guys that don't pan out
-I'm not saying Fred has given up on high schoolers... but seems less a point of emphasis now...
-we're Transfer U, might a well go with it, either "tired masses" or IHCC or whatever it may be
-high school kids have to be elite or have a particular mismatch skill set or what's the point
