What is the difference between scholarship athletes and walk-ons in terms of access and benefits to equipment/food/facilities/tutors/gifts (aside from the free tuition)?

I have no inside knowledge, but thought that walk-ons get all the same access and benefits.

(This was placed in the MBB thread due to possible Doug McDermott scenarios.)

walk-ons gain access to tutors, basic equipment, same facilities.
At least for track walk-ons maybe got extra gear to keep, only if they were good enough to travel. But they got basic workout gear(training shorts, shirt, socks). Academically, they got access to tutors, athletic academic advisor. If they travel with the team they get a money allowance for food.

Hopefully that helps. I know its info about track but all the sports are basically the same.

training table is the main difference...Walk-ons can't eat at training table. Some walk-ons can't participate in fall camp. As far as equipment, tutors, etc. all players have the same access but there may be priorities applied by coaches.

Pretty sure they have access to everything in terms of equipment and facilities. They get to eat on the road for sure. Gifts??? Big 12 gifts are to the entire team, so yeah they would get them.

What is this eating at the training table deal? I have heard references to that in other threads and never been clear on what it is or what the reason would be that walk-ons wouldn't get it.

So walk-ons get everything that the scholarship players do, but can't eat with the team. Food seems like a weird perk to take away.

As someone who walked on for football I can tell you I got ALL same benefits as scholarship guys minus the free tuition and room & board money. I even got the $500 NCAA clothing assistance money to go buy clothes.

I ate training table, had access to the trainers, weight room, doctors, same equipment. The only thing I didn't get was my school and housing paid for (at least until I earned my scholarship).

Tuition, books, housing...only so many things you can take away.
So the costs outside of sports are the main difference...the tuition, room, board, books, etc. The not eating with the team thing is still kinda weird. I guess if walk-ons don't get their room and board (food) paid for, the "training table" could be considered board.

Training table is pretty much the same as food service, except you have more variety and you can eat as much as you want.

Coach Mac was trying to work out some funding so we could have eaten catered food (ex. a rotation between hickory park, hyvee, etc) but wasn't able to get the funding.

Never heard of a walk-on having access to training table as it is factored in with scholly money but you lived it...

Money for clothes? I never heard of this stipend. Only thing we got back when was money for books and a check for rent and expenses if you lived off campus.

Can't anyone eat as much as they want at food service?

Training table is a little different than food service. Some players may be on specific diets and thus their intake may be monitored at training table. The main thing is the comraderie of eating together as a team, I would say, as you're eating in isolation from the rest of the students.

I'm sure back in the day training table had much better food than a school cafeteria had to offer but today food service choice has improved so much it probably has evened out.

As far as football, I believe Curt is right. The walkons sure as hell eat training table. The differences are pretty much paying for school and stuff like that.

I'm going to say the FB team eats a tad better than food service when it comes to training table.
