Nothing says practical like a mile-high building. Sucks if the fire alarm goes off and you have to use the stairs.

He can do whatever he wants with his oil. I mean gold. I mean liquid diamonds. I mean money.

That's to the point that it's almost hard to wrap the mind around just how high up that is

I want to know how much sway will be expected at the top. Correct me if I'm wrong, but skyscrapers sway a tiny amount with the wind, correct?

Towers sway ... and they're what? 9 floors?

how many standard floors in a mile?

I'm wondering what kind of materials they're using that won't have problems with the extremes in temperature...

Wouldn't it just be 5,250 (height of proposed building) / 10? 525 floors...that's a lot of elevator buttons!

Re: Saudi Price to Build Mile High Skyscraper

I was just reading in ENR (Engineering News Record) last week about all the new skyscrapers planned in the desert. Dubai's new buildings dwarf the Petronas Towers, which seem like not long ago were the tallest towers in the world. Now Abu Dabi is planning a new tower to top Dubai. Wasn't it just 15 years ago that Garfield used to try to ship Nermal to Abu Dabi because it was a desolate wasteland?

Either way, I hope these buildings have a lot of concrete! I work for a concrete forming company, and am just now moving into the sales group that tries to land the contracts for these monsters!

11 (10 residential + ground) and I have seen water sloshing in the toilets on the top floor during high winds. I was at the top of the Space Needle once during high winds, and we got some drinks at Starbucks, and set them on a table. They were noticeably shaking as well.
