If people don't want to play good teams in noncon how does KU keep scheduling all these huge games year after year? Why wouldn't a team like Florida or Witchita St or Zaga want to do a home/home? A loss doesn't hurt either team too much and a win helps a lot. If KU can play AT temple and we can't schedule a decent team there is something wrong with us.

A. RPI does not purport to rank teams best to worst, it is only a metric.
B. Beating one of the worst teams in DI college basketball should not necessarily improve your rank in any system or metric.

Good points.

When teams are as far apart as ISU & MVSU were game time, it'd drag down the top team somewhat. Plus MVSU jumped something like 40 or 50 spots, because the RPI was so low and the loss came against a top-30 (at the time) team. It's especially like that for the first couple of months; movement isn't as large as time goes on.

Way up there
I won't argue we need a better non-con next year. I'm sure the staff are looking into a serious upgrade.

Upgrade in schedule doesn't mean upgrade in RPI. Playing an undefeated mid major is better for RPI than a top 10 team with multiple losses. No way to predict RPI, it is too dependent on other factors. That's the best and worst aspect of using the RPI.

Kansas true road games:
Temple
Georgetown

ISU true road games:
Iowa

Doesn't look to me like either team is going too crazy on the road.

I do...you can't rely on UNI being ranked next year or any given year for that matter. UNI is not one of the "Big boys" even though they are a very good team. I think deep down you know that.

UNI has been a Top 100 team 9 of the last 10 years (10 of 11 after this year). The down year was 109. UNI is nothing but help SOS, especially on the road.

ESPN sets them up and pays they for those games. KU is a national name, they bring people to the TV, so ESPN wants to get them on as much as they can in big games.

Not many team want to play in Hilton even if they get a game in return. Getting teams to play ISU has been a problem for awhile now. For a few years we did 2 home games and one away game with MVC teams. I really doubt many MVC teams want to do that now. I still think playing Drake and UNI, when we don't play them in the big 4, in home and homes, would be good. You would only have to play them on their court every 4 years, and it makes Iowa look bad.

There are very good reasons teams in neighboring states don't want to play ISU at this point.

Why do threads about Iowa State needing to upgrade its non-con schedule with power conference home-and-home series always get hijacked by people wanting us to play in Cedar Falls every other year?

A UNI win means exactly nothing to national media/sportswriters/Iowa State's image 9 out of 10 years with this season being the 1 year that it would have been useful.

I want to see us play Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, etc. especially so we can travel to the road games. And I also would love to see us get home-and-homes with Duke, North Carolina, Arizona, Ohio State, Michigan State, Louisville, etc. just for the opportunity that it would give the team and the great game at Hilton it would make for.

Why doesn't ISU basketball just do things like Kansas? Because they can't?

ISU's in a tough spot IMO. Not a household name yet but people know it's very difficult to win in Hilton. You're almost scheduling hoping you can split with us. I know Nebraska and Minnesota turned us down this year and if I were Minnesota I wouldn't want to play us considering we recruit hard up there.

In all reality Fred and company have scheduled very well 3 years in a row until this season

Playing UNI is better than playing some 2-12 college that no one has ever heard of. Playing UNI at least gives ISU a challenge and gives the fans something to look forward too. I just cannot get excited for half the games on the non conference schedule. Those big names schools don't want to play ISU. Even if you did play a big name school you could still drop a no name and play UNI. Just because it isn't a classy place to go or whatever, playing there still benefits the team in the long run, more than playing a no name.

I agree that I would rather see UNI on the schedule than another Mississippi Valley State, but I would much rather see a Wisconsin/Marquette/Minnesota team on the schedule than UNI, too. Getting UNI on the schedule isn't going to do anything in the big picture for Iowa State - it's just one game. Consistently upgrading the non-con schedule across the board is what matters and UNI might be one small piece of that but some posters focus on it to a serious fault.

I would love to see those games also but they are not going to happen. Wisconsin Marquette Minnesota isn't going to let CFH play a game in their state by choice.

I really don't care what others outside the program think about the UNI game. In the long run it is good for the team to play at UNI or home vs UNI. College basketball is about getting ready for late Feb and March. Playing UNI would help the team in that.

It absolutely will happen as the profile of the program rises.
