This may be an unpopular choice, but Prince is quite possibly one of THE BEST guitarists.

entire damn thing...Prince - awesome guitar solo 3 - YouTube

Prince Play that Funky Music live at the Forum - YouTube

Prince refused to allow Guitar Hero to use his music because he said, ""I just think it's more important that kids learn how to actually play the guitar. It's a tough instrument - it's not easy. It took me a long time, and it was frustrating at first. And you just have to stick with it, and it's cool for people who don't have time to learn the chords or ain't interested in it. But to play music is one of the greatest things.

I think admitting that Prince is a legendary guitarist somehow threatens a guy's internet 'manhood.

Love him or hate him--Prince is an amazing musician. A top-15 all-time guitarist.

For all the sucky-as# Superbowl half-time shows the last 10 years---Prince playing in a downpour (Bears-Indy? 2006?) was amazing

Anyone under 30 just do not 'get' his talent. It's off the charts

While it's not greatest, the "best" guitarist ever BAR NONE no ******* questions, even close is Shawn Lane. Nobody holds a candle to him. Not only could he play guitar like Jimi Hendrix (closest person I've ever heard to perfecting Hendrix's sound), he could play almost any other style. He could shred faster than anyone (on record from Guitar Magazine), he could play country, slow stuff, indian music even (he is still regarded as some in India as the only westerner to get their music right). He also started touring professionally at the age of 14 in a southern rock band where everyone was in their 30s (the band was Black Oak Arkansas).

You look at everything he did on guitar, your jaw drops, and then you learn he was just as good on piano as guitar. ******* ridiculous.

Guys like Paul Gilbert, Guthrie Govan, Buckethead, Rusty Cooley, etc all think the guy is absolutely insane and untouchable. Buckethead even called him the greatest that ever lived.

****** video sound quality, but you can hear the guitar. He does standard Hendrix (All Along the Watchtower) and then at the very end makes it his own. 23 Years old here:

Slowing it down immensely:

He was also an amazing pianist (he's just messing around here):

I saw Black Oak Arkansas at the Ottumwa Coliseum oh about 40 years ago. It's possible I'm the only person from that show that's still living.

Side note- I was in LA a couple of weeks later and Black Oak was playing at a bowling alley on Sunset Strip.

Ha, amazing. How was it? I've seen some live stuff and it looks like they put on some awesome shows. Was their guitarist between the ages of 14 and 18? Because if so, I'm going to call you one of the luckiest people ever.

Funny though too because at the record store on Wednesday, I came across about five BOA LPs. Thought about buying one

I don't agree with Gibbons in Top 10, but he's a great guitarist. Interesting to note that Gibbons was in a band before ZZ Top that opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience back in I think 1967.

Hendrix didn't necessarily say Gibbons was the BEST but he did say Gibbons would be the next *hottest* guitarist. Still saying a ton.

I don't want to necessarily take away from Prince, because he's a good and underrated guitarist, but when you listen to enough GUITAR and play enough over the years, you hear a lot. What he did in the video is nothing new and innovative, it's actually pretty cliche as far as guitar solos go. It's a good solo, but nothing new, and for that nothing very difficult but I commend him for doing something that fits the song which is what matters the most.

Another guy I see who should be ranked WAY higher is Peter Green. 58th? You have to be ******* kidding me. For those of you who didn't know, Fleetwood Mac actually started out as a british blues rock band in 1967. Yes, he's actually the guy who wrote Black Magic Woman..NOT Santana. He also wrote Oh Well, which has been covered a million times...oh by Santana again (I love Santana, but he didn't write either of those). Even Judas Priest has covered him (Green Manalishi).

More interestingly enough, he was in The Bluesbreakers. Guess what? He actually REPLACED ERIC CLAPTON in the band because everyone in the band thought he was a better guitarist than Eric Clapton. Both Clapton and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin always give him major props. He was a big influence on Joe Perry of Aerosmith too, as well as Gary Moore.

No Tony Iommi?
No Tom Morello?
No Slash?
No Neil Young?

No Randy Rhoads, Dave Mustaine, Dimebag Darryl, Zakk Wylde, Stevie Vai, Bucketthead, Stephen Carpenter, or Don Roeser?

I'm not saying they all deserve to be on the list, but they at least deserve to be in the discussion.

I agree. Slash especially deserves a spot on that list. And Randy Rhodes was unreal. I don't think that Keith Richards should be on there. Also, Lindsay Buckingham and Tom Morello deserve some mention. I guess if I were to rate them with my limited knowledge, I would go:

1. Hendrix
2. Slash
3. Van Halen
4. Rhodes
5. Clapton

I can't say he's a top 10 guitarist, but he's one of the all time best American musicians and songwriters. Right up there with Springsteen.
