Terrible hire. His head coaching resume speaks for itself.... he's Prohm 2.0. He'll bring in some decent players.... just like Prohm was able to do..... but won't be able to coach them.... just like Prohm.

He had talent at UNLV, and stunk it up.

TJ is not on ANY schools hot list of coaches to hire right now.... none. Nobody would want him. We only do because he's buddies with JP, and has a history at ISU. JP even said in his taped recording that he wouldn't necessarily hire a head coach with great record or resume, but rather one that is the right fit for ISU..... you knew right then it was TJ.... terrible resume as a head coach.

Hope I'm proven dead wrong on this one and TJ learns how to coach all of the sudden. This does absolutely nothing for my excitement of ISU basketball going forward. I don't think much of Cyclone Nation will be too excited about it.
Well said. It’s a f***ing disastrous hire.

If those are the only two options- hire TJ without a real search or JP drink beer, then hire TJ- we have a lazy AD.
Sorry you misunderstood what I was inferring. The process is not necessarily better just because it takes longer. There is a lot that happens with these coaching searches that the average Joel’s not privilege to. if it is most likely going to be TJ, might as well get on with it.

This will go down as the worst coaching hire since Gene Chizek. Are they going to mint some coins with this guy’s face on it? The Wizard of Otz. Nothing to see here. Ignore that man behind the curtain!

The difference of course is that Chizek was considered an amazing hire at the time and you wouldn’t find one fan not excited. If anything, it is a reminder that rarely do people have any idea what they are talking about at this point.

JFC . Of course it started weeks ago, I’ve been saying that. Everyone has been saying that.

But there are constraints to not having a vacancy. As in, you can’t generally interview candidates. Who benefits the most from those constraints? The guy you know.

It’s not complicated.

That's a very obtuse way of looking at things. Who's to say Pollard didn't check with other candidates to gauge interest and see what a buyout would be? You can have a coaching search without having formal interviews. There are these things now called phones and actually computers where you can do a video conference.

Interesting there doesn't seem to be legs to the initial story by the LV Review-Journal that TJ is the next coach. Not seeing any national sites independently reporting.

TJ could be the guy, but maybe this is why Jamie said in his press conference this morning to not believe anything except from ISU's Athletic Dept.

The paper could have great sources or they could be doing the bidding of UNLV. Jamie would have had to ask UNLV to interview TJ. So who benefits most by getting the story that TJ is the guy? UNLV. They might feel they have ISU over a barrel and having the report out there gives them stronger leverage in keeping TJ's buyout at $3M.

It could be someone in media or UNLV AD with an axe to grind with TJ. Weaken his position at UNLV, even if he doesn't get the ISU job.

Maybe Jamie knew this was going to get nasty, when he made his statement this AM.

Hope you're right. I could definitely see UNLV fans wanting to get rid of TJ, that's for sure.

His recruiting at IOWA STATE is better than any other coach.
He did recruit at ISU well but Prohm actually had a couple of classes that were equal to what TJ did.

In the end it is going to come down to x's and o's, conference as a whole will always recruit well.
It will be his coaching that will decide things. How he does against Huggins, Self, Beard, Kruger is what it is all about.

If he cannot stand toe to toe with them he can bring in a bunch of 4 star kids, it won't matter the results will mostly be bad.

The only one that I'd like to know is whether they called Devries's agent. He's one that I think you'd have to at least gauge an interest before making the hire. Beyond him, I'm not sure you can make a case that any other candidate was head and shoulders better than TJ.
Agree....called a few agents (including Devries) just to get the feel for potential interest....maybe be did the last two weeks.

I also wonder..if JP.has wanted TJ, why extend Prohm a couple years ago?

I would love to hear you expand on the talent he had at UNLV this year. I certainly see the talent due in next year, but his team was not talented this year.

How much of it was talent winning in spite of bad coaching? 2019 sticks out as a good example of this, not to mention we weren't all that good last year with a lottery pick on the team
Yeah, he won when he had talent FOR THE MOST PART.

A couple of points... One, UNLV could have leaked this to let it get out there that the job might be available. Gotta believe that if they wanted to keep him, they would have been in the process of putting together a counter.

Two, the possibility of this happening surfaced not this week or even within the last month. It started at the end of last season. Anyone who doesn't believe agents representing the interested haven't been sending feelers out to Pollard over the last year are naive. I have no doubt that the interested have sent feelers to Pollard even before Prohm was released.

If it is TJ, it's anything but a hasty move. It's one that's been long planned.

All I know is that for what we can, or more appropriately, what we will spend, he as good or better than anyone else we would get.

We can get him on the (relative) cheap and he'll trust Pollard to take care of him.

With all of that being said, I'm ok with the hire. I'm not super excited, but I am excited to see what he can do. He's a great guy, he's one of us, and unlike 6 years ago, is now ready for the opportunity.

They will if he wins.
You know this jsb, nearly all will give TJ a chance. If he hires an OVC quality staff and struggles to add anyone, that will change quickly. At least he has the cover of inheriting a 0-18 roster.

JP is a true friend. He helped gut a program to a level in which even the most average coaching friend can succeed. He even told the fans it’s a long rebuild.
