Redshirting a possibility for Buckley

“I think everything’s a possibility right now,â€￾ Fennelly said. “It all starts with when we are told she is healthy to play. When we are told that, then you work your way backwards and say, ‘Well, if it’s middle of February,’ depending on when it is, that’s where it starts. Number two, then you’ve got to be fair to the kid. Are we going to burn a season of competition for five games, whatever? And then as a staff, with Jadda, her family and her doctors, we have a plan like we always do. I don’t think anything’s out of the realm of possibility.â€￾

Makes no sense to me to burn a year for a couple of potential games even if she could come back for a few games I am guessing she would not be in game shape. It's not likely we will be fighting for the league title or anything and we have guards available. Hurts having her out but I would rather get three more fFULL seasons of Jadda than 2 and a fraction and the fraction being hurt and maybe ineffective at this point.

Bad break but the most sensible thing is probably doing the redshirt.

We're into the second half of the season, so in order to be eligible for a medical hardship she can't play the rest of the year.

She's right on the edge with games played as well, so both requirements (30%, none in second half) preclude her from playing in any more games and still redshirting.

Obviously, having Jadda all year was the expectation. Now that changes. Since we have experienced guards who can step up, seems best to have her redshirt and fully recover. Who knows, could be the best thing -- make sure the injury fully heals and maybe lessen the likelihood of recurring problems. It's exciting to think of having her for 3 more years to help younger guards during that time and to lead the team with even more maturity.

I've been saying all along I'd prefer the redshirt and assumed this would be a very viable option. The team and Jadda would be better off long term going for the redshirt, letting her heal completely and then come back as a team leader next year. She could be a part of something special over the next three years.

id hate to bring her back for a half dozen games especially when our seniors have been so spotty...esp Moody.

If she did redshirt this year she would only be out this year and not the next year correct? The Tribune article has gotten me all confused.

The only fly in this ointment is that WBB players quite often graduate in four years, and unless they are interested in grad school - the 5th year is not so attractive to them.

Seems to me they wanted Genesis Lightbourne to redshirt her freshman year but she wasn't interested.

I, personally, would like to see Jadda get the redshirt, but we should all hope for whatever is best for her.

I agree with wanting to see her red shirt due to the fact she has missed so much playing time and only seems to be able to give us a couple games before the problem returns. She can not be in game condition since she can not be doing any running at this time. The last time she came back she was average first game out then had a great game and then we lost her again. In the end though it is HER choice to red shirt or not and wish her the best in what she decides to do.

This above everything else. I'm not sure I'd want to sit out if I were her; I'd want to play.
Dangerous IMO for a program to have a built-in excuse if it doesn't achieve their goals for the year - "oh well, Jadda sat out, after all."

Given what a competitor she is, I would think she would jump at the chance of 3 seasons as the starting QB on the team. Does anyone know what would be the basis for denying a medical redshirt request, if made?

BF has always made redshirting totally the choice of the player. Though in some situations, like Claire's, its a no-brainer.

Some may say or use that as an excuse ( I for one will not) but if you look at what she has done so far this year in 9 games (4,13,9,2,2,13,25,7,10 points)she has been in double figures only 4 times. She had a great game against Iowa (and re-injured her foot) and I believe some of her scoring problems to date have been because of the foot issue.

Did Madison Baier apply for a medical redshirt? I remember ISU talking about it but never read more that I remember. The roster bio lists her as a junior, not a redshirt-junior and no mention of redshirt in the writeup.

Maddie has not yet applied for a medical hardship, last I heard, and is in no hurry to decide.

Buckley and Moody just don't mesh well together - that would be a good reason for a medical redshirt...

I may be incorrect about this, but I seem to recall that a medical hardship application doesn't happen until it's actually time to get that extra season (after eligibility otherwise has run out). I could be completely off-base, though.

I believe that is correct.
