Red Tape

I typed 'red tape' in an email this morning and thought, where did that term come from. Of course wikipedia was where I ended up and found it interesting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_tape

What are some other terms that you use that you have no idea where it comes from, or when you did find out you were surprised, or that you weren't using the term properly now that you know. I love this kind of knowledge.

I'm sure most if not all people under the age of 20 have absolutely know clue why we say dial a number when talking about phone calls.
