I rarely no tip, someone told me that it sends the message better if you give a very small one or do like you did and write a reason on the check. If you no tip without a message, they will just think you are a douche and cheap. My BIL once told me that the sign for crappy service (said he learned this in the twin cities when he lived there) was to leave a penny in a water glass still with water in it. Not sure if that is something for the local diner he liked or legit.There's been a couple of times I haven't tipped. Service has to be real bad if I don't tip.
The last time was less than a year ago. I wrote on the check "NO SERVICE" It was at a hotel. When I checked on the hotel bill breakfast wasn't on there so they must have comped it.
Another time I was at a Village Inn, the coffee was cold so it was obvious they just grabbed a pot that someone left at their table. Then she brought me the wrong food. I told her and she looked at her pad and confirmed what I had actually ordered. Then she came back later with the wrong food again, it was obviously old. I asked her if she was just giving me leftover stuff that was made by mistake.
