It's that time of year again and I feel like I got ripped off this year. Not real happy with my supplier but as the tank is rented I don't have a lot of choices. Filled up this year for $1.69. I know we had the hurricane and all in Houston but it sounded like it had not affected prices but that was just after the flood. It is almost impossible to get price data until the EIA starts publishing prices but that is in October.

I don’t know anything at all about buying propane for the heating season, but I thought the rule of thumb was to contract it in early to mid summer to lock in the best price.

Not exactly sure.

Buy the tank, fill during summer. I have 1.09 contracted for 50% of my usage.

You got ripped on $1.69/gal. Is there something preventing you from switching providers? Even with a rented tank you can still switch.

If/when you do, buy the tank. It'll be cheaper in the long run. And as others suggested, buy in the off-season (Summer)

My dad is in the propane/oil business in southern Iowa. I chatted with him a couple weeks ago and he said prices were around $1.20 on contract and $1.35 no contract.

Edit: Prices are always negotiable too. ;)

Well would you look at that we've found something Argent is an expert in!!!!!!!!!!!

I may have a spare tank I'd sell if anyone is interested. It is for my shop but the infloor heating lines have leaks so I'll probably never use it again.

Yep, that is kinda what I thought. Ferrellgas is in trouble and they are ripping people off. I guess I will be changing suppliers next year. Charts are hard to find but from what I could find early fall is actually the cheapest but its a bit more of a risk.

I called around last year and checked prices against a good local supplier. Also inquired about tanks and they didn't have any available except new for like $500.

I had Ferrellgas for the grain bins. They were always higher and one year I didn't need to buy/dry grain. They raised the rental fee. Had them remove the tank.

Already paid on the CCard but haven't delivered yet. Perhaps I'll call tomorrow for prices and get them to adjust or just cancel. The extra $200 could just buy a used tank.

Ferrellgas is like the Waste Management of the LP industry. Go local, you'll get a better deal and better service.
