I didn’t pay enough attention 2 years ago but how close was Prohm to taking the Alabama job? Did he interview at all or was it a ploy for an extension?

I only ask because I can’t help but think that Nate Oats would have parlayed his success at Buffalo to land the ISU job if Prohm had left. His Alabama teams are a lot of fun to watch and he can definitely recruit. I remember ISU fans raising money for his family when he was an assistant at Buffalo and I believe he was Wil Clyburn’s HS coach. Was there another connection to ISU I’m missing?

Prohm probably wishes the same with the lack of support at ISU.

A lot of other places would have fired him after last year. 2/3 seasons being dumpster fires with a pretty big underperformance in between will get most the axe. And now the bottom has completely fallen out this year. He's had plenty of support.

A top 5 team. Packed home games. A roster that could compete for a conference title. A school that places a ton of emphasis on basketball. That’s what Steve Prohm had walking into this job.

But sure “lack of support”. Some people....

There was interest but he did not interview. I believe they reached out to Prohm's agent but Steve wanted to be here and moved ahead with an extension. I remember thinking at the time that out of either
1-extending Prohm,
2-letting Prohm go to Bama and bringing back Fred,
3-letting Prohm go to Bama and bringing in TJ,
OR 4-hiring Oats.
I preferred hiring Oats. Appears that was the best option so far at this point. I won't lie, I was also intrigued by the interest of Fred returning but also was fine with extending Prohm. That was a hard crossroads for JP perhaps but he ultimately made maybe the worst decision and made it even worse with such a high buyout but I believe the Alabama interest led to that factor and here we are.

It’s crazy how the coaching carousel works. If you would have told me Dana Altman going to Oregon was the best thing to happen to ISU basketball, I wouldn’t have believed it!

steve has gotten plenty of support, sick of people putting down our fans for demanding less and giving more time than any other fan base in the country

it is ok for a fan base to demand competency from one of the states highest paid employees, this isn’t charity work, there are standards, and the current guy isn’t getting it done, and there are plenty of competent people that can do it for less

I wonder what the consensus of fans would be if Fred somehow came back here now. Thrilled? Pissed? Cautiously hopeful? I'm not sure how I'd react to be honest.
I’d take him back in a heartbeat. He’s a guy who would sell season tickets, which is something we will struggle with if we don’t get the right guy. My issue is I’d take him back, but not at his buyout price.

It would be awkward to say the least. Had Fred stayed away from the NBA he had a chance to basically make a legacy at ISU that no one would ever touch if he took a team to the Final 4 or National Championship. Now I am not so sure he could just pick up where he left off and turn this around and take it to the next level that he might have had he not left. He was in over his head in the NBA and he hasn't exactly turned Nebraska around either. The transfer game he played is now a different game than when he was here last time too.

It would have the potential of what has happened to Scott Frost at Nebraska, bringing home the golden boy only to have it disappoint you and make for an awkward situation. It was a lot of fun the 1st time around but to think he can replicate that a 2nd time the odds are probably not in his favor.

If he was coming back from the bulls, that is one thing, but it’s like getting divorced and then remarrying again after they ho’d around a bit. Looks desperate and usually doesn’t go as well. Need a fresh start.
