Duh!
I agree with this and makes me wonder why we didn't see more of him throughout the year. Was he dinged up or in the doghouse? Because most of our other LB's are objectively bad. I also noticed Goodwin playing more than he has for some time and was wondering if we were missing some LB's in addition to the ones who have been done for the whole season? Anyway, we need a portal guy or huge improvement from the LB's.

I thought James impressed for the last few games and Neal was pretty good yesterday, so hopefully the secondary has some replacements already in line.
Lovett was dealing with an injury this season too.

Again, the game plan and playcalling was great almost the whole game. I'm very sorry that I mentioned that it wasn't perfect and could have cost us the game at the end.
It's really interesting how people will have hindsight and think they're coming up with something creative or unique. Hindsight is a wonderful tool to justify whatever you are feeling.

Just watched highlights again (forgot we won on a 4th down play).

Burkle's td catch was great. Plucked it out of the air in double coverage. Overall he had a great game.

Alston seems to have some "the man" vibes that are emerging.

Hanson looked real good.

Rocco played very measured. His couple of escapes were great. Overall, hope he makes incremental improvements and feel REAL good about his future.

I agree with that aspect but more because a QB dive is a strength. What happens if ISU scores on a first down run there? Bad scheme?
It is what it is, but here is what is undisputed about run plays vs pass plays: If a run play is unsuccessful, the clock runs. Since we had time outs, the clock for 'us' on offense was not an issue.

Offense:
  • Great plan, scheme and play design by Mouse
  • Didn’t agree with some of the goal to go calls at the end of game, particularly not running the ball but they got in
  • The TD pass to Hansen was a thing of beauty
  • Excited we have more years of Buhr
  • Sama is two steps “too fast” or too soon from his 13 yard run being a 70 yard td. Hoping he devours film and learns to love the hips of his lead blockers
  • Is Alston a potential dude?
  • It’s time to officially give Hansen his propers. He’s a legit back.
Defense
  • Cooper Ebel was outstanding
  • Thought Lovett and James were solid
Officiating
  • There were 2-3 more unnecessary roughness/late hits missed on daU
  • How was a rb pointing at our defender for 10 yards then 5 more seconds in the end zone not taunting?
I will disagree on the end of game calls. I thought we should have run it, just not sideways. I have been very impressed with our QB sneak game this year. I thought there was no way they would stop us if we ran that twice. Running the ball takes time off the clock for any potential game winning field goal drive for the opponent as well.

On the taunting, I am fine with the refs showing some restraint. I saw the ref running next to that player, talking to him. Likely giving a warning. However, there was a jumping thumbs down as well that was identical to an unsportsmanlike conduct call that was made against the Chiefs' Jaden Hicks on Christmas day.

I would love to know why Alston was not playing much this year. Did I miss an injury? Jayden Higgins was probably our best player this year. His backups weren't seeing a ton of time. That being said, Alston was rarely out there and had no catches until yesterday.

The running back room is in good shape for sure.

Overall the defense looked pretty lost for most of the game. Cam Ward is the real deal for sure. But hoping we can shore up the run defense next year.

Well yeah but if there's 1:20 or whatever on the clock when ISU scores on first down the answer is 'it is what it is'?

Yes of course, but this is a silly argument you're making because the same result occurs if a pass play is successful on 1st down.

I don't think my next statement is necessary but I also think it would be silly to argue contrary to the following: Ideally that 4th down play is ran with <10 seconds on clock vs 56 seconds left on clock...

The Des
It was clear from the outset that the coaches decided to get the points and not care about the clock. I don't know if you remember but earlier in the season we had a turnover on downs failing to score 1st and goal inside the 5.

Play #1, 2:00 check into a play that looks 100% like a Hanson run to the right. Get Alston 1v1 against a corner. Should have easily been PI.

Play #2, 1:56 heavy look, play action pass. Get the defensive holding call.

Play #3, 1:52 I formation, direct snap to Hanson. Dive to the 1.

Play #4, 1:16 pass look shifted into run look, but if you're paying attention you're expecting this to be a run look based on who is in for WR and TE. Ended up being play action. Rocco rolled out to his left and had the pass deflected. Had a guy wide open if he could have gotten it there.

Play #5 1:05, I formation, Hanson dive to the 1.

Play #6, 0:56 Quick snap QB sneak TD with Noel on sweep action.
Play 3 we got a garbage spot, too. Hansen gets in on play 5 with a better spot on play 3.

I agree on Alston and Green. They should have seen more targets. Still, I feel better about our 2025 WRs today than I did before the game. Even if they move Ngoyi to DB, they still have Alston, Green, Eskildsen, Overby, Sowell, Daniel Jackson, Brown, Townsend, Black. That’s still a clear step back from Higgins and Noel, but not as big of a step as I was fearing.

If you look at the top 20 rushers in football, we played a crazy number of them, about a third of them. It’s not all because they had one game bs ISU. A real statistical fluke.
The football gods haven't let go of all their grudges against ISU.

As someone else noted, Ward played the entire game against Syracuse and they still lost. I think Iowa State is better than Syracuse.

And as still someone else noted, with Ward in the game Miami led for 16 seconds. With Ward in the game Iowa State led for almost 10 minutes.
Ward was 12 of 19 for 190 yards with 3 TDs and 10 yard average. Williams was 5 of 14 for 26 yards and 0 TD's and 1.9 yard average. There was a vast difference between the two.

Of course. And their switching to mostly running plays kept ISU offense off the field and affected defensive adjustments and performance. This is a dynamic situation. There is no one static factor. Ward is an amazing hired gun. No one is debating that.

It worked out obviously, but when you are that close to the goal line with that score and that much time left, I don't know why you do anything other than line up and muscle it over the middle into the endzone. We had plenty of timeouts if we needed to stop the clock for any reason.

There is a weird vibe on this forum that whenever we win, you are not allowed to criticize any of the decision-making in the game without getting Dumb'd or "you should email the coaching staff har har".
