Hello fellow fanatics,

My sister-in-law is turning 30 on the day of the Iowa vs Iowa State football game. She would love to bring a bus to tailgate but we aren't sure the best way to do it. From what we heard, it may be best to see if there are any being sold from owners.

let me know if you know of any other ways to get a pass or if you know someone selling theirs.

Thanks in advance for your help

How big of a bus is it? If it is one of the shorter ones, you would be best off just parking in one of the public grass lots for $20. If it is a full size bus, you will either have to find someone with an RV pass who is selling for the paved lot (they very rarely resell them though fyi) or park at the Vet Med public parking.

Not sure on the size of the bus, it is one of her friends.

For the public lots, when do they open? Same question for the Vet Med public parking, when does it open? I know it will be crazy since it will be the Iowa/Iowa State game, so just trying to put a game plan together.

Thanks CysRage for the advice!

Public lots and the Vet Med lot open 6 hours before kickoff so for the Iowa game, they would open at 9:30am. If you are able to find a donor lot pass, those open at 7am. And no problem! I always like to help fellow Cyclones!

Another unrelated question (kind of)

How steadfast are they on the 6 hour rule? Is it 6 hours no ifs, ands or buts. Or is it if I'm there 7 hours early I can get in...

Thanks!!

It's been awhile since I tailgated in the public lots but I remember there being full sized buses all over. Has that changed?

Good information! Thanks.

Anybody know how early we would want to be at the public lots if they open at 9:30? Should we be there an hour before?

Also, anybody know if a bus is allowed in public lots? anyone at Iowa State I should contact for these questions?

Thanks again

For the Iowa game in 2011, the kickoff time was 11am. We went at 10pm the night before (it was a blast!) even though the public lots don't open until 5am. What they do is stage you in lot G4 and once it is 5am, they move you into G2 and G3 where you will park normally.

Short answer: yes you should be able to go even before the lots open but they will make you move your car once the public lot opens at 9:30am for the Iowa game.

Good information! Thanks.

The lots won't fill right at 9:30 but if you want a lot that is closest to the stadium you will want to go right around when the lots open at 9:30am. Like I said above, if you go at 5am, they will likely let you park and tailgate but once the lots officially open they will make you move to the new lot.

The CyHawk game they handle public parking quite a bit different than they do most game days, especially for buses and RVs I in the public lots. Normally you can show up the night before and park in the paved portion of Vet Med with a bus or RV and take about as much room as you would like but for the Iowa game they don't park buses and RVs on the paved portions. They usually have some limited grass spots they will allow overnight parking because the want to save all the paved parking spaces for all the extra cars.

Parking on game day for the Iowa game is a mess too, they already start forming a line for the grass lot right to the south of JT (basically it's mostly students that park there) Friday evening and line everyone up in a "holding lot" in one of the grass lots Northeast of Vet Med. I'm not sure how early they will start parking those people, usually it's been about 2-4am in the morning most years because they want that holding lot ready to go for the first rush of public parking but if you don't do the overnight thing I would highly suggest getting to Ames as soon as you can in the morning. Traffic is a complete mess usually, technically 9:30am is the 6 hours before game time this year but I would not be shocked if they just start filling publics lots at 7am like they do with the donor lots just to keep traffic or once the lines start to affect the traffic so I don't see them holding strong to the 9:30am time. This will be the first time in awhile we won't be doing the overnight thing with the RV as we're planning to hopefully sell it soon so I bet we will try to be in Ames by 7-8am and if we have to wait in line with our cars we will because I bet that traffic will probably be backed up onto Hwy 30 by 9am.
