But they probably will tank based on location, alone. Everyone else who has tried something there has.

You think People's TANKED? It was there for like 16-17 years and the only reason it isn't there now is that the owners of the building decided not to renew their lease. It wasn't due to poor performance. I hardly think Lincoln Way and Welch is a bad location for a bar.

I don't think that this is the Ames Community's doing at all. It's a family who's dad owned the building and left it to them thinking they can do it better than the current tennant. They kicked Peoples out, Peoples didn't fail.

Guess I don't understand their business plan. I get that they want to keep it a classy kind of place, but why not just renovate the former Peoples and use their formula? I'm sorry, but the non-college crowd is NOT going to spend much time at that place, no matter how nice it is. I live in Ames and am over 30. The only time you'll see me in Campustown is if some of my younger friends HAVE to go there. Even then, it is just for a few drinks before heading to Main St or somewhere else.

On average, people that are beyond college age have no desire to drink with 21-year-olds. And they don't enjoy feeling "old" when they go out for drinks. Sure, college kids go to bars on Main St, but that's a different type of drinker. On top of that, there's no parking in Campustown.

My point is, a place in that location HAS to cater to the students. If they are expecting non-students to carry them, they will fail quickly.

I'd love to see a jazz place where Lumpy's was...that place was a dump! Although there's something to be said for dive bars. I STILL miss People's.

I will admit that 16-17 years is really good for a bar. But very few businesses make it, long term, at Lincoln Way and Welch. Don't know if it's overhead, or problems with the summer blues, but they almost all do, sooner or later, go down.

And I was referring to the "classy bar" concept, not the concept of "dive bar".

I was in there about an hour ago and I got hammered! Now my money is gone and I can still type pretty well so that means the deals were not good!

I was skeptical going into this place because the owners forced People's out to persue their own selfish dreams but they offered to let our band and a couple others to play there on the agreement that the bands would get the cover. The bands brought in sixty customers but the managers decided they were gonna keep the cover and pay the bands nothing. They have a $40,000 sound system that they refuse to turn up and they cut both of the headling bands off before their sets were done. Half the beer was sold out by the end of the night, leaving little beer selection and they had one slow bar tender to serve a somewhat busy bar. Wouldn't play there again and wouldn't go in this place again. The management are liars and the sound people are don't know what they're doing.
