I'm watching women's water polo thinking you must be in incredible shape to play that.

Then they showed the USA bench - apparently not.

I know what you mean:

I'm 2/2 on seeing a nipple when NBC shows an underwater shot of the players grabbing each other in the women's water polo match.

LoL. There's a lot of checking going on underwater.

Unfortunately, I was the victim of seeing men's butt crack yesterday during the platform diving.

Dang - apparently water polo is one of those lame sports that just end in a tie.

Wouldn't people say the same thing about many football players?

I wouldn't. Most of the large football players go hard for a few seconds, then huddle, tv timeout, penalty etc. These girls tread water almost constantly. I've played football and from a conditioning standpoint (not talent) I could probably cut it. I think after 3 minutes of water polo I'd be trying to sneak in a pool noodle.

Yeah, that wasn't my point. Most people who don't know football always comment on how fat the linemen are. There's really no difference here.

I don't know what the fat women are doing that you're seeing, but i've played the sport and my dad was a water polo player in college. The sport is hard as **** and is a great workout. You get easily tired because it's played in the water. You have to work extra hard to do things and that's obvious if you've ever swam before or done stuff in the water more than just laying on your back. There's a lot of swimming and jumping (and dunking) involved in water polo normally.

Physically, younger gymnasts, particularly those who have not yet gone through puberty, tend to be lighter, smaller, more pliable and flexible, which aids them in performing more complex skills and gives them a better strength-to-weight ratio. When a gymnast hits puberty, growth spurts and weight gain may affect her centre of gravity, causing mental and physical stress as she must adjust, and in some cases relearn, her moves to compensate.[9][32] Smaller athletes have generally excelled in the more challenging acrobatic elements required by the evolving Code of Points after the 1960s.[13] In addition, older gymnasts may be more prone to certain types of injuries caused by overuse of bones and muscles; younger gymnasts are less likely to have such problems, or more likely to be able to work through pain while injured.[9][13]

Wikipedia agrees with me. Puberty pretty dramatically changes a girl's body. Men too, but in general it seems to help men because they gain muscle.

ETA: and because of the low body fat on many of these gymnasts, I bet most of them don't hit puberty until 15ish. I actually suspect that Gabby Douglas hasn't yet made it. Kyla and McKayla are close. Compare the bodies of those three to Jordyn and Aly. They are much larger through the hips/thighs. Not fat, but just look more like young women instead of girls.

As the girls get older, they get "womany", as my wife says. This exact thing happened to Nastia Liukin. She is "womany" compared to where she was four years ago, and it was clear in the Olympic trials that she simply didn't have the strength and stamina to propel her current mass the way she needed to. Perhaps she didn't train well, or perhaps it was not feasible to obtain the strength and stamina necessary for her present stature.

Wow! Location is everything for the Japanese womens' soccer team, and winning is everything for that Chinese family.

On another topic, Turkey's WBB team came to play early on. It won't last, but they're playing hard. Too bad they play so sloppy. Those mistakes will haunt them.

That's nothing, the North Koreans kill your grandparents if you don't get gold.
LOL my south korean friend and I always joke about that. They probably put goalie in the world cup to death after he let up like 9 goals against brazil or whoever it was.
