Grand Marais, my kids always wanted Sven and Ole’s cause pizza and husband always wants herring at Angry Trout. I just want to grab a book at the cute bookstore and read it while watching the sun set over the lake.

If you have family members who are a bit more adventurous there’s a day trip you can take out near Hungry Jack (on the Gunflint trail) and then go to Duncan Lake. The portage from Duncan to Rose has an amazing waterfall and beautiful views. It’s a way to go to the BWCA with a day trip form you can fill out at the entry.

I second many things said here. Beware that the North shore can get cold even when rest of Minnesota is warm, dress for all kinds of weather. Agate picking is fun and popular. All state parks are a treasure, we’ve done them all, but tettegouche is best. Temperance River* is second best, great hikes near highway. Underrated and away from weekend crowds: Crosby manitou, though bugs can get bad depending on what time of year. Bean and bear hike is one of the best hikes in the Midwest.
*Edited for temperance river (not cascade), though cascade is nice too

We always visit the Lockport Marketplace and Deli just on the south side of Lutsen. It's a small place, but has really good "home cooked" type food.

We did the North Shore Scenic Railroad trip from Duluth to Two Harbors. Definitely recommend.

Watching the 1000' freighters come into Duluth harbor is also pretty neat. If you can get a rooftop table at Grandma's it's a good view of the canal and bridge.

Also toured Glensheen manor. It's a beautiful property. My wife was more into the family backstory and knew much more than me. If you're into that, it's worth the time.
