Was just looking at Mile Tomlin’s record and considering his legacy.

He’s 183-107-2 compared to Cowher’s 161-99-1. He’s won 1 Super Bowl similar to Cowher and has never finished below .500 while Cowher and Noll had 2 and 6 losing seasons respectively.

He does have his fair share of WC game exits and a losing record in the playoffs.

Does Tomlin get the respect he deserves? Recall the interview where he was asked about USC/LSU and he was fairly upset/disrespected by the notion.

Likewise does Reid get enough flowers for all he’s done on offense and winning? Feel like Bill (both Belichek and Parcells) were lauded as these football geniuses and Jimmy Johnson as this amazing winner.

But it doesn’t seem like Reid gets that level of acknowledgment.

——
Now, Cowher, Parcells, and Johnson all went on to be analysts. I can’t envision Tomlin or Reid sitting behind the analyst desk after they’re done coaching.

Is their more workmanlike approach why they’re not more highly regarded?

I have other thoughts for the less regard with both of them, race, weight, and religion, but curious about other rationale.

I think Reid gets plenty of credit.

Tomlin is maybe a bit underappreciated. But I think that's because it's always felt like he just "kept the train on the tracks" so to speak. No rebuild required. They won a super bowl just 2 years before his tenure started with the same, young QB.

Add George Seifert and Mike Shanahan exclusion from HOF with multiple SB rings while **** Vermiel is in with only SB win and the worst winning % of the three.

Tomlin is the kind of guy you may not fully appreciate until he’s gone. Similar to John Harbaugh in Baltimore. Competitive teams, very few awful seasons, steady. Look at the mess that is Cleveland in the same division. How many coaches at QBs have they had the past 20 years?

Reid is an all timer. He could see 3 more rings if he stays another 5-7 years and things stay on track.

Any coach since 2000 is going to be judged against what Belicheck and Brady were able to do. Plenty of good teams that saw their season end in Foxboro and only had “what if?” to show for it.

Yeah I think Reid gets a ton of credit and it’s much deserved, he was moving to a pass first offense before a lot of teams in the era.

Belichick also has taken a bit of a rep hit since Brady left. Without Brady his record is absolutely awful and no one wanted to touch him after New England. Still gets a ton of credit but I could easily see Reid passing him in a number or ways, same for mahommes and Brady.

Reid is either #1 or #2 for best coach of the 21st century, depending on who you ask.

I think Tomlin might be overlooked by more casual observers of the NFL because it has been so long since their super bowl win, but he is very highly regarded within the football industry. An interesting thing to me is comparing Tomlin's tenure in Pittsburgh with John Harbaugh's in Baltimore. For guys coaching at rival franchises for so long, their records are nearly identical.

I don't know how Reid could get more highly regarded, I think he's pretty widely considered the best coach in the league, at worst one of the top 3 coaches.

Tomlin also highly regarded, put together some really good teams, they just haven't done much of anything in the playoffs for 10-15 years. I think he's thought of pretty favorably by people that actually know ball.

Tomlin is a good program manager. I don't think Pittsburgh really spends the way other franchises do.
Steelers ownership has always loved stability that's exactly what he is.

3 coaches since 1969 is wild. Coincidence Iowa Hawkeyes copied their uniforms?

He's basically a 10-6 coach, which is solid.
He's only 52 and could easily coach another 10-15 years.
The franchise could go from 1969-2039 with 3 coaches.

I think I read somewhere that Mike Tomlin has not had a single assistant coach go on to be an NFL head coach. That's kind of an amazing stat given how long he's been there.

My bet is Reid sticks around long enough to break Shula's record. 5 more years puts him at 70 years old and Mahomes at 34; guy rides into the sunset with the all time wins lead which ironically is what Belichick wanted more than anything.

That's kind of what's holding him back from being elite -taking a chance on an innovative young up and coming assistant coach with no reins. He has zero coaching tree while Cowher had tons of guys taking bigger jobs under him. Coincidence or not no Playoff wins since 2016. and peak Ben...

I would love Andy Reid analysis, i think he would be a straight shooter.

I believe I read that Tomlin once stated he had offers to do halftime studio hits on the Steelers bye weeks but he said he would be uncomfortable analyzing or "second-guessing" his peers during games. He said he wouldn't come in with any pre-game homework because he "already has a job" that takes a lot of time during the season. Something of that nature...if true I respect that.

Reid and Tomlin have been blessed with very good quarterbacks the majority of their careers. Is that the coaching, system, organization, or what?

I was hoping the Bears would get Reid back in 2012 or whatever year he moved to KC, wonder how that would have turned out in Chicago...

Donovan McNabb went from one of so called best QBs in the NFL to completely flaming out of the league in 2-3 years once Reid left. Alex Smith was considered a game manager, and an average QB until he was with Reid, then was considered one of the best during his few years with the Chiefs. It’s Reid’s system that makes these Quarterbacks so good.

Pretty sure smith was still considered those things under Reid as well. That never really changed and it showed in how limited KC was in the post season with smith
