I went close to it's opening and wasn't impressed. However, I will give it another shot to see if they have improved.

Like other posters, I'm excited about Wallabeyes opening with the 2nd floor, outside bar. Should be sweet.

I do like Oddfellows too.

They must have paid someone as far as best burger. Went there after it had been opened a couple weeks and the burger was horrible as well as the service. The meat seemed like it had been grinded to mush. I will give it another try but just don't see how it could be close to best in Iowa let alone Ames.

I don't have a dog in this discussion as I have never had a burger from the Brick City Grill. HOWEVER, I can tell you that no one is paid. The last I knew the restaurants do not know who the judges are or when the judges were there.

I haven't been to Brick City Grill yet but I've been to Oddfellows once and been meaning to go back there. Enjoyed the burger but not the fries.

judging by the reaction, Sounds like BC Grill is worth it.

I love Brick City Grill. It's the best classic typeburger in Ames. Oddfellows is better but they got so much stuff on it. Which sometimes I'm just meh about.

I'm actually gonna go there tonight now that I saw this.

The fact that Zombie Burger didn't win, tells me all I need to know about this contest.

Never been there, but I will definitely give it a shot. Any burger joint that doesn't have a burger with an option to add an egg to the burger cannot be in consideration for best burger anywhere, so I look forward to see if that is an option on their menu.

Brick City Grill is decent but I am really surprised that they won this award. I prefer Wallaby's just in Ames alone, not to mention other places across Iowa that are better.

I think they have a Farmer burger that has an egg and hash browns on it.

I vote for the Rusty Duck in Dexter

That's the place I was trying to remember that I saw on Iowa Public Television:

My main stop in Dexter is at the Rusty Duck to sample the winner of the Iowa's Best Burger Award. Over 200 restaurants vied for the honor but Brad Waldron's Rusty Duck established in 2004 took the prize for one impressive looking burger.

Waldron: The particular burger that won it this year was the bacon cheeseburger. We grind our own meat. We use top sirloin ribeye trimmings for my steaks and we grind it ourselves, patty it. There is really nothing that we do any different. It is just that you know it is the same burger I have been serving for years. After we make the cheeseburger we put about 10/12 pieces of bacon on it and it is stacked pretty good. You know it is definitely a dinner. If you can't eat it you can definitely take it home and eat it the next day.

Kaercher: 10 to 12 pieces of bacon? I mean wouldn't two be enough?

Waldron: No, two wouldn't be enough.

Kaercher: And I think it is pretty safe to say that no one walks out the door hungry.

Waldron: We have pretty good sized portions on everything. Like our hamburgers are 14 ounce, pork tenderloin is 10/12 ounces. We go through quite a few to-go boxes.

This is the best burger in Ames. Plus, PBR listed as an appetizer.

Maybe it was an off day but I went to Oddfellows on a Sunday afternoon and I will never go back. They try to copy Zombie Burger but if you want to do you first need to know how to grill a burger. Again, maybe it was an off day but I won't be going back to find out.
